FRN#1-Day 4 Longreach

Well the winds blew last night like Calamity Janes “Windy City” but the little tent stood fast. It was freezing though. I had to get up and put half my wardrobe on to keep warm……(Kimmo – hippo pj’s fashion statement, well I did better….lol). Somebody decided to leave the TV on in their motor home on LOUD all night so wasn’t the greatest sleep.

But then I wake up to this just after 7:30am

Good morning Longreach

Good morning Longreach

So today is my day off!! Hoping to clear the head and start to relax. Had a chat to Karl and the folks and after speaking with them at length was feeling a bit better about things. At the end of the day “it’s just a road” as Davo said and it will be here another time if I decide to pull the pin.

Today I’m doing touristy things, so off I went to the Stockmans Hall of Fame.

Stockmans Hall of Fame

Stockmans Hall of Fame

The grounds here are lovely and the building….I’ll get to that later.

Inside there is so much to look at and really you could spend the entire day here if you read everything  but I don’t have that long. Artists of all kinds have work displayed, like this carving of a “Ringer” from beechwood (I think).

Timber carving of a Ringer

This place is HUGE and you can see the time and dollars that people have put in there to make it look spectacular. The galleries (as they’re called) spiral round the inside of the building.

Full length of the Hall of Fame

There’s different section dedicated to The Stockman, families, pioneers, the stock and horses and the utility and medical services, each one unique and showcased beautifully.

This statue of a horse is made from chains, sprockets, spring, nuts, bolts and other truck, tractor, car basically mechanical bits they had. It’s pretty amazing up close.

There are so many more photos but I guess you’ll just have to go for yourself.

Then it was off across the road to the Qantas Founders Museum.  Again you could spend the whole day here ready stuff so I took lots of photos instead. Karl would so love this place. So these are for you Sweety.

Rolls Royce engine

Rolls Royce engine

These things (RR engines) are enormous and I could probably stand in the front opening (but I thought I might get in trouble)….

As you can imagine being Qantas there are planes of all types everywhere, even miniatures travelling around the ceiling suspended on tracks. Don’t ask me what they are but they are impressive non the less.

DSCN0311a

Outside the actual museum, there is an Original Hanger with all sorts of mechanical know how in it. The size of the hanger in itself is impressive…..if only we had a shed that big…..lol

Inside The Original Hanger

Inside The Original Hanger

Considering how old these planes are they are in reasonable condition (on the surface anyways).

Now this is high quality interior design if I ever saw it! This is in the inside of a 1929 Qantas single engine. The pilot sat at the rear of the plane in a fighter style cockpit (which you weren’t allowed in). What made this special and I’m sure you paid extra for, was it had a toilet on board (yep that’s it just up the front behind that partition) and only held 6 passengers…..luxury!

A spot of lunch in the museum before heading into town to check out the Cobb & Co store (where I only bought a hat badge) before heading back to camp to do some work.

It would be remiss of me not to look after Angel, so I conducted my pre-flight goings over in the blazing sun. With that completed it was time to have a bit of a relax myself.

Chillaxing!!!

with my book and a bit of rest. Just what the doctor ordered.

Somewhere in between I seem to have misplaced the ensuite key. I’m sure I’ll find it but just now it’s hiding in a reaaaally good spot. Lucky they had a spare for me…thanks Jenny.

A lovely Thai chicken and cashew nut dinner in The Woolshed Restaurant (onsite) and a surprise and very welcome phone call from a special friend. Thanks heaps for caring and taking the time to have a chat to me…. It’s wonderful to know that I have such wonderful friends when you aren’t at your best.

In saying that, I have met some fantastic grey nomads so far. Of course they all ask “where’s your hubby” to which I reply “at home” and the look of OMG on their faces is amazing. When they find out what I am doing and how far I have come on my own they are I don’t know…I don’t have the words for it. But they tell me, I’m amazing, inspirational and brave (to say a few) but I am just me. I don’t consider myself any of these but then again as I was reminded today maybe I am just a bit of all these and that I should be very proud of myself for what I have achieved and what I am doing (not many females would do this).

Anyhoos, it’s getting late so I’ll say good night and catch you all later.

FRN#1-Day 3 Longreach

Note to self – don’t stop in Augathella again. Up and packed had to get some help with the ratchet strap then off (a little later than planned again).

It’s cold this morning but I thought it would get warmer the further north I headed – was I mistaken. The wind had some strength and a big bite to it.

It's windy

It’s windy

I had to stop in Tambo to put on my wet weather jacket cos I was freezing. The clouds had been coming over dark now for a bit and I thought I was gonna get rain. Instead it was dewy mist – thankfully.

Wildlife is not to bad this morning and the next stop is Blackall for fuel and a snack. Check for service to ring my Sweety – but nothing 🙁

Feeling very alone even with Smurfettes company

Feeling very alone even with Smurfettes company

It’s been hard riding again and the wildlife as the morning goes on increases to the point that I wonder why I am doing this. Eau de wildlife is the frangrance of the day and the live ones are scaring the bejesus out of me. I know you don’t like to hear negative things but I’m not enjoying this ride. I don’t know why as I’ve done huge hauls like this before, but something about this is…well, upsetting me. Wish I had Karl with me.

Anyway, come into this little town in the middle of nowhere called Ilfracombe. They have all this amazing machine set up along the side of the road. Thought Karl might like this one.

Ilfracombe Machinery

Ilfracombe Machinery

Finally into Longreach, find my spot (with ensuite) and set up camp. Took me an hour and a half to pitch the tent in the sun. The ground is soooo hard I had trouble driving the tent pegs in.  Little did I know all the grey nomads where watching me in disbelief of what I was doing. I kindly gentleman came over and said “do you need a hand love”. All I could say was the peg bent! To which he wondered over and came back with a couple of spares he found and gave them to me….one is much stronger than mine and drive in after a little less persuasion.

On the paddle wheeler, I met so many new people. They were all amazed at my gusto of riding around (well part) Oz on my own to have lunch with friends. “You’re going to Darwin just to have lunch” was the common comment. But it was the looks on their faces that got me….lol

Now, I took so many photos it’s hard to pick one to show you how beautiful the river and scenery was but here’s a couple.

It tells the tale of a “duffy” a castle rustler who stole cattle a bit at a time and then drove them almost to Adelaide (sorry I can’t remember the town). It’s animated, real life, narrated by Jimmy and painted but not in the sense of a painting. These painting by a local artist now in his 70’s come to life and pop off the screen and move and evolve as the pages of the picture book turn – truly amazing. Thisis something if you come to Longreach you HAVE TO DO!

Time to say goodnight but not before I get a pic with Jeremy the young stockman come story teller.

Back to camp around 9:40pm and into my tent…..brrr.

FRN#1-Day 2 Augathella

Did I sleep well in the tent – not to bad until 5:00am when Neville the neighbouring dog decided to bark non-stop for the next hour and a half….argh!! Never mind I got up and started to pack which took me way longer than I expected. I suppose cos everything was wet and sandy and cold. Can’t complain though, I got to see this beautiful start to the day.

Good morning Lightning Ridge

Anyway on the road, but not far and I have to stop to re-attach the left pannier. The road is so bumpy, I fell like a milkshake. But you couldn’t tell just looking at the road

This is pretty much it.

The scenery at the moment is nice and green (for here)

Along this stretch of road to Hebel you see all too frequently these signs…. and I kid you not they mean it. Wildlife is in abundance.

Not far out of town and the left pannier which I’ve been watching has detached again. Grey nomads I’d met at LR are all heading in my direction and after playing leap frog with them they catch me as I’m sitting on the side of the road trying to get the pannier to re-connect. They kindly stop and offer their assistance but not much they can do and I thank them but wave them through.

The guy in the servo (who used to ride) was ever so helpful and we got a suitable strap and attached it – thumbs up. Almost lunch so I decided to stop for lunch and a bit of a break. I am fatiguing quickly on this ride as I’m not at my peak ride fitness.

St George to Mitchell and I’m peaking! The wildlife is unbelievable and has me quite fearful cos what you think is a tree suddenly moves. Small shrubs aren’t – they are sheep and as for the eagles, they are huge. I’m forever on and off the throttle and the horn (to scare the birds off the road kill). I don’t recall ever seeing so much road kill in my life and the beautiful Australian outback smells, stay in your nostrils. Maybe there’s a new scent the marketers to do a little something with…. eau de road kill!!! LOL

I had to have a break in Mitchell, but what a nice place to park.

Fuel at Morven and my nerves on edge from all the wildlife on the roads. I chat to a couple of older fellas who are travelling through to Augathella also for work. They wish me well and get on their way.

Finally I arrive at Augathella (my stop for the night). I stop for a pic and the fellas from Morven pull up alongside me and ask if everything is ok (cos we can lend you a hand love if you need it – no problem). Thanks guys just grabbing a pic – love the outback hospitality.

YAY - Augathella

Get my room key only to discover my budget room is smack bang in the middle of a wet sandy marsh – I don’t think so. There is no way I could get Angel in there safely. So I park in the motel, walk back and ask for an upgrade to the motel with undercover concrete parking.

Upgrade - 5 star? but it was all brand new inside.

Upgrade – 5 star? but it was all brand new inside.

No phone or internet service here, so I had to ring Karl from the pay phone (message bank). After an average meal I ring Karl back on the way back to my room. Today has been totally emotionally draining for me and in my message I was in tears. I wish Karl was with me – he is my rock, my inspiration, my bravery and my love.

FRN#1-Day 1 Lightning Ridge

I’m going to work today backwards so I don’t forget things……

After a long days ride I arrived in Lightning Ridge at around 4:30pm – totally exhausted, it was a hard days ride.

Made it - Lightning Ridger

Made it – Lightning Ridge

The last 60 kays from Walgett to Lightning Ridge were the scariest kays  I think I have ever done. I almost thought I was in a native fauna ZOO!!!  Let’s start with the Emu. Now scouting the roads (which BTW aren’t the greatest) I spotted these poles (cos there are poles just there in the middle of nowhere) but then one of them there poles moved – YIKES!!!! Emu and lots of them scattered about for the next 20 kays…..nerves were high and spidee senses were going ballistic. Once I got past the emu the roos started. Talk about dead roo alley (and fresh too), the living ones were everywhere and camouflaging themselves very well as trees!! Big buggers too! But there were quite a few small ones. This reduced my speed some what as it was just way to risky. Now for the one and only Bore (thank goodness he was having a sleep without breathing). And now lets talk about sheep – stupid creatures. They decided to join forces with the skippy-roos and just played havoc with the last 40 kays.

I did manage to see Stanley the Lightning Ridge sculpture just out of town.

Into my digs and set up camp, just as it turned dark. There was so much rain today, everywhere is wet but I managed to get a reasonable camp site for tonight.

Camp Kimmie

Camp Kimmie

A late lunch was in Coonamble (an unscheduled stop) as I was getting tired. I was awake at 3:00am and couldn’t get back to sleep and it was catching up with me. A terrible toasted ham, cheese and tomato sandwich and a juice was lunch, grabbed some fuel and that was it.

Coonamble roadhouse

Coonamble roadhouse

Angel has been using more fuel on this trip so far than I am used too….not sure why. Could be the extra truck load of weight she’s hauling, the head winds I struck and the mountains of rain that just wouldn’t let up til Dunedoo. So I rang Karl just to check and will be monitoring as I go.

Out the door this morning at 6:00am into the rain that hadn’t stopped all night ARGH!!! It bucketed and bucketed and just continued. So I changed plan and headed straight up the freeway to the Hunter Expressway and then started heading inland. I chose this route so I could do some roads that I haven’t travelled before. Sometimes I think just slabbing it might be best….something to think about!.

So that’s day 1, not a lot to report and even less pics cos of the rain.

FarRide East #29 – Lake Cargellico

YAY, another FarRide to yet another town that I haven’t been too!! Lake Cargellico.

Plan done well in advance and taking Angel for the run since I haven’t had her out for a decent run in way too long and I need to see how I handle her since she will be going to Darwin in June.

Friday 23rd May – 12:01pm

Start docket date & time stamped – check       Fuel – check      Plan – check      GPS programmed – check      SPOT working – check    – Let’s GO!!!

Up the Putty Rd, not stopping for a coffee today but I did stop for a pic with this shinning young man.

The Shiny Man at the Halfway House

Note to self, watch the gravel on the way in if you stop there again. The site isn’t looked after at all, I’m surprise the guy advertising that bacon & egg rolls does any business at all (I didn’t see him BTW).  Now I’ve been watching the GPS and it’s doing some real funky stuff so I decided I’d be making an unscheduled stop at Bulga to re-key the route and see if things get better.

Another pic that has eluded me for many years the sign at the start of 10-mile (which for those unedumucated = 16 kms).

start of 10 mile

It’s a very easy run cos Angels dance shoes need new soles but I need to get this trip out of them, so there’s no pushing any envelopes this trip.

Into Denman, lap of town and out to Muswellbrook before stopping in Singleton for the scheduled fuel and snack stop. The bugs I collected on the way.

Now it’s out to fight the traffic – peak hour ARGH!!! I’m cruising along watching the day slowly change through the dusk hues.

Sunsets as I’m heading down the new Hunter Expressway – excellent piece of road! Traffic starts to thin out but the poor GPS is lost it keeps telling me to turn off at all these roads that are no longer accessible. I figure I can’t get lost on here and it’s not long before I see the sign Sydney exit 1km.

Sunset on the Expressway

Heading south now on the home stretch M1/F1 whatever you want to call it these days and it’s amazing how quickly that last light disappears, almost like turning the light switch off…lol.

I’d told Karl I would be home about 8-8:30pm (allowing a buffer in case I had a problem) but I arrived home at 6:40pm (35 minutes ahead of the plan). I had a baked dinner (baked beans on toast) lol and chilled out for the night.

Saturday 24th May

Dark o’clock (or stupid o’clock as my friends say) and I’m surprised it’s as warm as it is for 3:30am (as we roll out the drive). Plan is up the highway to Lithgow taking it easy. Unable to light the road up to see, I decided to play it safe and sat behind a truck which led me all the way up to Mt Victoria – thanks mate! No stopping until I get to Bathurst, cos it’s soooo chilly I needed a hot chocolate and a rest room.

An extra layer and hot chocky

An extra layer to get me through, the warmer neck warmer and to warm the cockles of my insides the regulation hot chocolate.  Watching the sunrise is always a beautiful sight and this morning was no different…..Good morning Saturday!

Lovely and chilly.

Lovely and chilly.

Next stop is Manildra for fuel and I’ve been pretty lucky I haven’t encountered any wildlife….phew! A few riders pass me while I’m in the servo. I wanted to get pics of Angel with town signs this trip, but the signs were either too far off the road or in spots that I wouldn’t take Angel. I did managed to get a couple though.

I’ve completed a few FarRides now but I still can’t help but get excited when I see other FarRiders on the road, knowing we are all heading to the same destination – why – because….”It’s Just A Road” 🙂  and this long distance riding family that I have are truly inspirational.

Arrived at the BP, along with many others that were already there at aprox 10:40am. Fuel, say g’days and head off to the Lake Cargellico Golf Club for the check-in, more socialising and lunch.

The line to check-in

Two riding friends from Sydney, Richard and Andy also made it on time and we proceeded to line up for check-in. The lines never seem to get any shorter but it’s great to ‘avachat with everyone while waiting.

Peter – Reader57

Thanks Peter for organising another great event. Sorry I don’t have the group shot, but I think there was about 109 attending FRE #29.

Andy was dashing off after lunch to hopefully complete his first IBA ride and everyone else Richard and I spoke to were dashing off to elsewhere too. We were under the impression folks were also staying for dinner and so we’d booked accommodation at the caravan park. Nevermind, we get checked in and decide to wonder around town.

Our home for the night

Our home for the night

We bump into Gags and Heather who were watching the local footy before they headed off.  A stroll along the lake and it looked lovely – peaceful and inviting. But NO, you can’t swim there or drink the water due to Blue Green Algae…YIKES! for a temporary period of time (which wasn’t disclosed and there was no date on the sign to know how long it had been there), just a little disturbing. Anyway, we continued on our walk and came across a lovely elderly lady (who we named Ethel) in her mobility scooter. Now Ethel is 94 yrs old and thought it was grand that a lovely young couple like Richard and I would come and visit her town. Neither of us had the heart to tell her our partners were at home…..LOL!! I reckon another half hour chatting and she’d have invited us back for scones and tea!!!

Ethel on her way.

Not much is open here on a Saturday afternoon and it seems that even during the week everyone shuts for lunch (might have to recommend that to work when I get back).

The only place open for dinner tonight (other than the Golf or Sports Clubs that both do Chinese…go figure) was the local fish n chip shop called Fisho’s. Although, it’s really a bit of everything shop – coffee & cake shop, pizza shop, very general grocery, steak and chicken kiev (to name a couple of meals) and of cause fish n chips and reguar take away food. Five star dining at it’s best…..lol. It was ok, but I wouldn’t travel that far just to go there for dinner, ok. Biggles wondered in, we had a quick chat, wished each other a safe journey home before we headed back to relax.

Sunday 25th May

Yawn, yawn, time to head home. Went to open the door and Sylvester Pussy Cat was sitting right on the step to say “good morning”, noice. Packing the bikes up, it’s still a bit dark out.

6:15am Lake Cargellico

6:15am Lake Cargellico

Lucky I have the reflective tape on the top box and seat bag otherwise I might not have found Angel….lol.

Good morning Sunday! What a view to see the morning in with! Sunrise and sunset when I’m riding are two of my favourite times of the day. Amazing.

Sunrise

Sunrise

Mind you pulling up here, there were all big rocks over the road which had me let out an almighty scream which almost had me ending in tragedy.

Richards leading the way today and it’s kinda similar to sitting behind Karl (very comfortable). I would ride with Richard any day, all day. Sorry digressing. Turn off to Forbes and the roads are wet….argh! Angels dance shoes aren’t feeling the  best and any confidence I’d thought I had was now dwindling away. Forbes for fuel before stopping in Eugowra to check out some wall art that Richard had told me about. Pretty amazing stuff really, the detail is remarkable.

Eugowra

Eugowra

It’s fresh out this morning and Richard had promised a nice breakfast in this swanky place (that’s he’d researched) in Orange, so we didn’t stop long cos we needed coffee and food. It’s a nice stretch of road between Forbes and Orange and I shall go back there with decent shoes on next time to truly enjoy it. Unfortunately, today the road is wet all the way to Orange.

Orange, YAY! Park outside the swanky spot and WHAT – it’s CLOSED!!! Richaard!!! What happened to that research man. Apparently the website says open Sundays but the sign on the door said CLOSED Sundays and there were no lights on and nobody was home 🙁  Thank goodness Bensons Cafe was open and we had “hot” coffee and a great breakfast.

Poached Eggs...YUM!

Poached Eggs…YUM!

Feeling warm and fuzzy now and looking forward to getting home to Karl. Richard and I make a plan. I put on the tank and seat bag covers cos it looks like we are going to get rained on (I was secretly hoping that putting them on would frighten the rain away…he he). We’ll say our good byes in Bathurst (last fuel stop) and then separate at Lithgow where Richard will take Bells Line and I’ll take the highway (only cos of Angels shoes). We did get rain (but not much) and we are soon in Lithgow with a wave and a toot good bye for the last leg.

I’m reminded why we always take Bells Line – the highway is rubbish. Road works, idiot drivers, traffic lights, stop start, stop start, it’s enough to drive you insane. Not to mention that on this side of the hill the temperature has risen and I’m slowly cooking as still have all my layers and thermals on. Eventually, I make the M4, then M7, M2 and finally at 2:40pm I roll into the driveway – home to my Sweety – YAY!!!

Around trip 1637 kays for the 3 days. Not allot by some standards but a good warm up for the next adventure.

Angels dance shoes and buggered, but she did get a bubble bath as soon as we got home (she had bugs in her teeth after all).

Till the next adventure…..on a road somewhere!!!

Omeo Easter Muster 14

Good Friday, no work, no alarms, sleep in – YES!!! well at least until 7:00am anyways cos we are riding today. Bags and bikes packs, breaky done……let’s go!!

Ready let's go!!

Ready let’s go!!

Our crew: Karl, Leonie and me (we are meeting the rest of the Sydney crew at our destination).

Destination Tallangatta (Ta-lang-gatta), don’t pronounce it wrong the locals get upset. Big slabbing ride today straight down the Spume Highway to Gundagai where we were supposed to have lunch but there were eleventy-ninety million people with that exact thought…damn them. Anyways we’d managed to catch up the rest of the Sydney crew here and decided to just fuel up and head on to Tumut for lunch. And someone ordered a side of “flies” with their lunch…they were eveywhere – very annoying (Leonie blamed Karl…lol).

Can I just tell you here, that Daisy loved Granya. Corner after corner, dipping and tipping in, dancing the dance of twisties! I sat on Karl’s tail nearly all the way….ha ha ha (doesn’t happen often). We arrive at Tallangatta before 5:00pm and before it started to sprinkle. Lucky!

The rest of the crew arrived in just before we headed out for dinner which was at the pub (not a bad feed). A catch up on the days events and we are done and it’s time for bed. There’s not many pics today sorry.

Saturday 19th

Ward and Cathy put on a bang on breakky for us – thanks guys!!! before we headed out for a what was expected to be a great days ride.

Seeing as this is Ward’s playground he led the way and a pace that, well, Daisy just couldn’t keep up with. But that’s ok, everyone waited for us and Ward’s mates and the end of Cow Road to catch up… thanks guys.

Off again headed to Harrietville, the road through here is nice too! Stop here cos Dan wanted morning tea. Thanks goodness, cos I needed a ladies stop…phew! T’was just a bit cooool 🙂  I say, see youse later cos I going slow, you guys will round me up soon enough and besides I want to get photos.

Mt Hotham 2Over the top of Hotham and the descent to Omeo. This is a great road and ordinarily I would enjoy this on Angel but I just can’t get things together on Daisy today. There are sections that have gravel on them in patches (like a quilt) and mid corner or through your line and the surface at times makes it difficult to distinguish. Nevertheless, the fast guys fly through there and make things look easy.

Saw several of these throughout the entire weekend.

Saw several of these throughout the entire weekend.

Think they are trying to tell us something?  hmmm

Omeo bakery for lunch…..NOT! Way to many people waiting to get served. Leonie is still to arrive but we are keeping an eye out. Karl and I head down to the milk bar (which was empty…excellent) and order lunch which is served in a flash! Yes!!  We find Leonie and most of our group have lunch in the park. Lunch done, time to go and Ward leads us out to and up the Omeo Highway / Mitta Mitta Rd.

Now this section of road to Mitta Mitta, Leonie and I haven’t done before so we are happy to just hang back. Karl goes and has a play and it’s not long and I am riding alone, the rest of the group way in front of me. Dan, Wayne and Leonie are stopped along the way so gave me time to rejoin them. From there on Dan sat with Leonie and I for this next section. There’s a heap of road and leaf litter all over the place which for me didn’t make it very enjoyable and I just couldn’t get it together still on Daisy.

Most of the group is stopped (I don’t know how far up) waiting for us and we are advised we are about half way and have a break. Phew! Don’t know what happened here (but am thankful) but something clicked with Daisy (YAY) and the bends didn’t seem that difficult (the road was cleaner too and I was following Ward and his brother). Just quietly, Ward is lovely to watch ride and follow and soon I fell into a rhythm all of my own and decided to overtake them and head on my way. Having fun – finally (it’s only near the end of the day….lol) when I come across a fallen rider (not one of ours) and stop to offer assistance. Everything is under control but by this time the group behind me had caught up and stop to find out what’s up. All good we are on our way. The road to Mitta is good and somehow easier to ride now but it all comes to an end with a 60kph sign – we are in Mitta Mitta.

Regroup and out to Dartmouth Dam. I’m enjoying things now and the road out to the dam is nice. Scenic and sweeping and that dance I had learned earlier starts again 🙂  The boys go do boy and bike things, we just watch.

Leonie and I are the last to leave and mosey on out. We eventually come across Karl waiting for us at a different exit to Mitta Mitta Rd (ha ha ha) – he knew I’d go back exactly the way we came in (cos I don’t have any sense of direction) while everyone else took the short cut…oops!

Alas, our fun is cut short due to an unmarked Mr Plod tailing a couple of cruiser riders in front of us. He finally nabs a customer heading the other way and we get going 🙂

Ward and Cathy put on a BBQ for everyone before we head inside for coffee and the telling of tales new and old.

Sunday 20th

Today is our day off!! Leonie has friends coming to have lunch with us at Walwa today (so we get a sleep in!). Karl and I go for a morning stroll (not much happening) do a spot of shopping (window anyways) and meet Leonie for a coffee at the bakery.

Busy Easter Sunday in Tallangatta..lol

Busy Easter Sunday in Tallangatta..lol

On the way back we stop in for a browse in the olde country store and my beautiful friend bought me the loveliest scarf (a belated birthday pressie) – Thanks Loni xxx

BTW, the rest of the group have gone out for a day ride to Mansfield.

Exciting cos we get to do Granya Gap again today and now Daisy and I are on the same page, I’m looking forward to it 🙂 It’s a fresh morning with overcast skies but perfect to enjoy the ride to Walwa.

We meet Mary & Les, tell you what Leonie has some very lovely friends and it was a pleasure to have met them.

After lunch, Karl, Les and I went for a walk so Mary and Leonie could have time to themselves. Where does the time go and before you knew it, it was time to say good-bye.

Time to head home and he he he we get to do Granya again – darn…lol. I’d said to Karl I want to take some pics on the way cos the countryside is so green and spectacular.

Back early afternoon and more time to relax, have a cuppa and wait for the rest of the crew. It’s fend for ourselves tonight and we decide to try the local and new Indian/Italian cafe and Ward & Cathy joined us. The feed was good and if they are still there when we next go back, Dan has asked that Ward make a reservation for us all for one night.

We go and met another riding buddy who we are advised is in town for the night before heading back for an early night as we head home tomorrow.

Monday 22nd

No sleeping in this morning. It’s time to get packed, thank our wonderful hosts and be on the road – homeward bound.

We are waiting waiting for everyone to gear up and finally get going when Karl takes off. Still waiting, I decide to get going and catch up Karl and I think “well maybe I should wait at the end of town for a bit”. Waiting, waiting and Dejan goes past. More waiting and then I decide “bugger it, I’m goin’, everyone else will catch me up”.

What a beautiful morning, fresh, crisp, duey and perfect for a ride. I haven’t seen anyone from the group so just toddle along enjoying the gorgeous scenery and the fresh country air.

A quick stop of a pic of this beautiful old pub. Karl and I have stopped here previously for lunch and the photo opportunity (just can’t help it, the setting is lovely).

Koetong Pub

Toddling along and enjoying the curves and bends and most of the crew catch me up and go on past me before heading into Khancoban.  It’s chilly so hot chocolate for me and coffee for others to warm up before we tackle the Alpine Way.

Quick stop at Khancoban

Quick stop at Khancoban

Dan and the crew stopped at Scammel Spur Lookout for their photo op but Karl, Leonie and I have been there done that so keep on going.

I was looking forward to doing the Alpine Way on Daisy but unfortunately, there is too much oncoming traffic. What really irritates me, is that they think they deserve to drive on my side of the road too. It’s not pleasant and you are forever operating on “spidee senses” round the many blind corners.

Finally, we reach Dead Horse Gap which looks down onto Thredbo Village and wait for Dan and the crew to arrive. We thought it would be cold here (it’s normally about 4 degrees with blustery winds) but for a change it’s quiet warm (possibly about 10 degrees…lol). Time for more pics.

We re-group and head on through to Jindabyne for lunch.

Nuggets Crossing Jindabyne

Nuggets Crossing Jindabyne

Jindabyne to Cooma and then the long slab up the Monaro to Queanbeyan. Everyone fuels up and we agree to make our last stop at Suttons Forest. The 3 Musketeers head out of Queanbeyan and weave through the traffic and before long we are in Tarago. Dan and crew are nowhere to be seen but we figure they wouldn’t be far behind and continue on through the back way to Bungonia (Oallen Ford Rd). This is a nice piece of road, not much traffic….one of those forgotten gems I think, which brings you out at Marulan. Back onto the highway and into Sutton Forest service centre.

Coffee please, thanks Leonie and the bathroom, phew. Time to wait for everyone else and have a bit of a relax. I find that Daisy has broken her spotlight bracket and the light is dangling. Karl waves his magic and it’s temporarily sorted. As much as we all love going away and riding some magnificent roads that feeling that home isn’t far away seems to overtake everything. The crew finally arrive and we discover that one of the guys had a problem with his bike in Queanbeyan.

We say our goodbyes here and all hit the highway for that finally leg home. Alas, the traffic is atrocious and it’s not long before we are down to a crawl and at time stopped completely…..argh!!!! In our traffic jostling, Karl discovers Daisy has no headlight….yikes!, so we pull over and investigate. I have high beam and it’s decided that I sit between Karl and Leonie for the rest of the trip home.

Finally we arrive home just before 7:30…it’s been a long day.

Let’s see, 1894 kays for the weekend, some good memories and time to prepare for the next one.

Tintaldra 2014 – fully sick!

Since Tuesday I’ve had a headache and come Thursday it was all too much for me. It was doubtful I was going to Tintaldra this year. However in true Kimmie fashion, I mustered the internal fortitude and got up and Karl and I headed off on our merry way. We had Bambi meeting us at Pheasants Nest (change of plans Cooma) and Andy also meeting us there.

Non eventful run down the Spume Hway to Goulburn before turning off and heading to Bungendore. Not feeling 40% even, I headed to the IGA for potato chips (to keep my salt levels up) and Anticol to help clear my mose and head (as you can see they are still blocked). Karl being the Sweety had a hot chocolate waiting for me at the GunneDoo Bakery.

Andy’s waiting for us as planned at the BP and we head down to grab some lunch at the Turkish Kebab Shop.

Cooma for lunch

Cooma for lunch

At 1:00pm  Bambi advised he was in Queanbeyan so we advised him we’d push onto Adaminaby. Head was pounding and the thought of open sweepers I thought was the medicine I needed (this is my favourite bit of road) so I took off (maybe in hope of out running the pain). I think Andy was surprised I flew past him and Karl keep an eye of things from behind. We left the map I made for Bambi to get to Tintaldra behind the bar in Adaminaby for him.

The road snakes before Elliot Way are still pretty bad and in the wet are horrendous. Down through Elliot Way (there a reasonable amount of new surface..pebbles) but I have lost so much confidence that even the 4WD’s are overtaking us (Karl and Andy just a bit embarrassed following me…sorry guys). Turning onto Tooma Rd we haven’t got far now, go past The Southern Cloud Lookout and onto the home stretch. About 1 kilometre out of Tintaldra the heavens opened up and rain on our parade into the caravan park.

I say a quick hello to everyone except Ken (from ACT) & Bambi before going up for a nana nap and coming back down for a feast created by our wonderful hosts Rick & Ailsa. Just before dinner the two fellas arrive and the feasting and merriment begins.  During the merriment a bunch of flowers appears from nowhere and Sue is in tears. Why? Well, Brian popped the question! Yep he proposed! And Sue said “Yes”.

the happy couple

the happy couple

Unfortunately, I am not very good company and my head is not playing nice, so soon after the event I decide to go to bed early.

Saturday most are already up, had breakfast and ready to go. The group splits and most (including Karl) decide to do a big loop down to Granya, Tallangatta, Mt Beauty, Falls Creek and through the back road which is now sealed through to Mitta Mitta.

ready for the big loop

The small group Crowey, Bambi, Ken, Bec & I aren’t up for a massive day so decide to just do Granya then head down to Mitta Mitta for lunch.

Crowey, deciding the days route

I take it pretty easy as still under the weather but feeling a tad better than the previous 5 days (smaller headache but nose is blocked). The Omeo Rd to Mitta Mitta is a pleasant road of open sweepers and nice scenery which could easily be done at a much faster rate but not today.

happy Bec

happy Bec

Here’s Bec, she has a huge smile under her helmet right now!

Through Eskdale and there’s this stand out the front of a house which I’m going to stop at on the way back. The Omeo Rd or Mitta Mitta Rd is good, there sweepers and a few tighter turns but nothing that you’d get excited about if you love twisties. The is a 4WD cop floating near Eskdale but as Bec ad I were both doing under the limit he was disappointed (I was going slow enough I could see the look on his face) . It’s a beautiful day and the Mitta Mitta pub is a great sight. Fully restored and in a peaceful setting that I could easily come back to.

strong woman…LOL!!

There are some fallen rocks on the road heading back and Mr Plod is doing a community service and moving them off the road at various parts of the roads (as we all seemed to see him at different sections). Well done Mr Plod.

Andy, Ken, Bec & I go back into Corryong hoping to get a decent coffee and a chemist for me but argh!!! Everything is closed, I can’t believe it even the BP. Disappointed we turned around and went back to the Caltex fuel and settled for an ice-cream (no panadol either L ). Back in Tintaldra and it’s back to bed for me before dinner.

As has become traditional, before dinner we do the group photo – Meet the Tintaldra 2014 Crew.

Tintaldra 2014 crew

Tintaldra 2014 crew

I can’t breathe, my head hurts, my face hurts, so after dinner I sneak away (nurofen is your friend) and go to bed early again. I crawl into bed, read for a little bit and Karl comes back to the cabin and I’m asleep.

Sunday morning up early, pack and go down for breaky, feeling absolutely crappy.  It’s a bitter sweet morning. I love this place and I only get to see some of the people once a year but to be honest, I couldn’t wait to get home cos I felt so terrible. We say our hoo-roos and get going. We decide to back through Tooma & Elliot Way, where I see a small roo hop to the side of the road not that we were going fast but it’s enough to get the senses on hi alert for this section of road. Being in lead, I’d been seeing fresh horse poo on the side of the road for a bit now. Over a small rise and on the left is a Brumby feeding on the dewy grass. Hit the anchors cos where there is one there are usually more but they must’ve been back in the bush..phew. they are a magnificent sight though.

In Adaminaby we decide to push through to Cooma for a break – can’t wait. I’m exhausted already and my nose keeps getting so blocked that my eyes are welling up. Fuel and back to the Turkish shop for a break and not the best coffee. We go to leave but oh no, I’m not to stable on the legs so we have to wait a bit longer..sorry guys.  Back on the road finally and Karl takes us a back way to miss skirting Hume and it takes us into the north end of Queanbeyan…nice find Sweety! The road is good too….something to remember for next time.

Bungendore for lunch and a break thankfully as I’m not feeling fabulous still.  We say our good byes to Bambi as he will be leaving us at Tarago to go through Nerriga but Karl, Andy & I are heading up the Spume to Pheasants Nest. The day is getting away from us and I am glad to get to Pheasants Nest for fuel and another break. We say our good byes to Andy here and get going on the last leg. Finally in the drive, off Angel and unpacked, I collapse on the couch – feeling less than, I can’t even tell you.

I look forward to this trip every year and this year was no different but you don’t always have control of the elements that feel like they wretch the life out of you. So this trip wasn’t the most enjoyable for me but I did enjoy seeing everyone again even though I wasn’t terribly sociable.

Anyway, here are a few more of the pics I took over the weekend.

Tintaldra 2014 pic collage.1

So sorry if you find this report less than interesting or exciting but a blog is not always sunshine and lollipops. It’s about life and sometimes it’s not all merry.

Karuah River Rally 2014

Karuah River Rally – courteous of the BMW Touring Club of NSW was as good as any off road adventure to get my feet wet (well dirty) on (besides Karl recommended it would be an easier one for me to start with).

So with all the camping gear sorted and both bikes packed up we head off on our way to Wisemans Ferry (which turned out to be the easiest part of the whole ride) which will then lead into the first section of my new “Dirt Adventuring”.

Ferry ride at Wisemans

Ferry ride at Wisemans

Karl let some air out of the tyres and off we went to St Albans down the first section of dirt. Waved to some locals along the way. Let’s be honest here, I’m never going to be the quickest hare in the field more like the tortoise but I’ll get there….needless to say I’m slow on the dirt. Karl keeps checking his mirrors to make sure I’m still there – thanks Sweety!

Daisy, saw her friend Daisy

Daisy, saw her friend Daisy

I think I’m doing rather well, a bit wobbly here and there but ok there is a lot to get used to. Corrugations in the road, the actual surfaces changes from one metre to the next, reading the road (so different to riding on the bitumen) and relaxing your body to absorb the conditions and not “shake you like a milkshake” (which is what it was like for me….the tiny tuck shop arms I have where wobbling like crazy..LOL).

We’re about halfway between St Albans and Bucketty and I’m so focused on what’s in front of me – the road conditions (other than Karl) that I didn’t even notice where the hell this car came from. It was like magic..”poof” and it appeared! Anyway, no idea how long it had been behind me but I noticed it as we approached a right hand bend (nothing tight) by this time it was sitting so close up my clacker that I couldn’t see its headlights….”Yikes”. To say it spooked me is probably under understatement so I did what I would normal do on the road and on exiting the bend thought I’d more over for them (they were obviously in a huge hurry to get somewhere) and “WHOOPS” big mistake!

I hadn’t read the road right and off the edge I went into a soft dirt/sand verge heading straight for some fallen down trees. The thing I remember the most is saying “flock this is gonna hurt!”, then everything happened so quick. The rear went, the front went and out of fear of hitting the trees, I think I grabbed the bars and pointed Daisy in the direction of the road at the same time grabbing a fist full of throttle and launching her and me back onto the surface and facing the car which had decided to go around me and kept on going (eat my dust stupid bike rider). I’m not really sure what happened then but I ended up high siding and Daisy spat me down like a pancake with my left leg/foot stuck underneath her.

Here’s Daisy having a little lay down (she was obviously terrible tired).

Oops, sorry Daisy!

Oops, sorry Daisy!

Anyway, it’s amazing how adrenalin kicks in when there is fuel leaking from the overflow and the engine is still running (one spark and it could end horribly different) cos I managed to lift her enough while on the ground to wretch me left leg/foot out from under her. By the time Karl turned around (safely after the car took off), I was up, had the engine off and was upset that I’d hurt Daisy. With nothing broken on either of us we decided to head to Wollombi to access things better and have lunch.

In Wollombi my hero, Karl MacGyver goes to work straightening the bars, inflating the tyres and doing a check of things to make sure there is nothing seriously wrong with Daisy. Me, ouch ouch, hobble hobble, shacky, a headache and a few things learned decide that nothing is going to stop us having a great weekend camping and I chose to continue on.

Karl had planned the entire trip to be on dirt but after my little mishap decided it was best to stick to the black stuff until we get to Dungog.

North of Wollombi (Wollombi Rd) they are doing road works and guess what “yep” more dirt.

DSCN2435a

Wollombi Rd – Karl in front

Karl stops and says “I’m sorry Sweety, I didn’t plan this, the GPS says this way”, me “that’s OK, my GPS says the same thing” so it’s a very slow pace from me all the way to Maitland. Through Patterson and turn off towards Dungog, where we stop for food, water, alcohol and a chemist for medical supplies to treat my minor injuries (once I get my boot and gear off).

The final section of dirt starts about 15kays north of Dungog, down Middle Rd which will then lead us into the Frying Pan Creek Camping Area (which is nestled deep within the Chichester State Forest).

DSCN2448a

Start to Chichester State Forest

Needless to say, I’m just a tad nervous and a little savvier (after the mornings efforts) about tackling this section. However, on dirt nothing is the same. I keep talking to myself “chicken wings, relax Kimmie, rear brake only, the whole road is yours, don’t worry about anything/one behind you and you’ll make it. Sure enough, I don’t know how I did it – there were some pretty hairy down hills and bends (which at the time I was thinking “how am I going to get out of here”) but I MADE IT!!!

DSCN2450a

YAY..I made it!!

We surveyed the camp site and picked what we thought was going to be a great spot for us and proceeded to set up camp. After which I went for a swim in the creek to reduce the swelling on my left knee and ankle before applying my medical supplies.

Chef Karl, hard at work in the kitchen cooking us up a feed for champions!!! You da best Sweety xxx

DSCN2452a

Karl cooking dinner….yum!

We’d met our neighbours for the weekend. A nice bunch of fellas, we all get comfy in our camp chairs sittin’ round the campfire chewin’ the fat (so to speak…lol) and the guys advised me that I might hear some strange noises in the night ???. Time to hit the sleeping bag. Didn’t take me long to nod off but I was awake earlier than I had wanted due to the dolsed tones of the neighbours bodily sounds…..ARGH!!! followed by the ear piercing screeching of the white cockatoos. Ahh, the serenity!!

Oh, how good is a lazy Saturday – no phone, no technology, just nature in all its glory – and it’s time to hobble about and take some pics. Camp Special K & the noisy neighbours..lol. It’s so peaceful here (definitely a place to come back to).

You gotta love the serenity this place gives you. Just hobbling down to a crossing in the creek was soothing with the little wrens flitting here and there and the bush quail? I really have no idea what they were but they scratched around the forest floor looking for tid bits.

Up on the road in, there was this “warning” sign LOL!!   Apparently being a motorcyclist IS a cause for people to be wary of…..hahaha….we must be really scary!!

We are here….Chichester State Forest

Since I was in no fit shape to go for a ride, Karl took the opportunity to head into town for a couple of extra supplies and enjoy the ride on his own.

DSCN2491a

Karl on his way to town….

Being the good housewife that I am…lol, I spent the time hard at work – reading my book under our shade awning, having a cuppa tea and going for a swim in the creek with the fellas. Karl came and joined me for a swim when he got back (lucky cos Elliot the eel was swimming in this spot of the creek). It was so nice to just kick back and relax with Karl, not worry about a thing and just enjoy each other’s company.

As the afternoon came around those scary motorcyclists started arriving on all shapes, sizes and configurations of bikes.  One girl arrived on this – a postie of all things – fully loaded and she wasn’t exactly a feather weight (I kinda felt for the postie!).

DSCN2494a

the poor postie…

Most of the bikes were as you’d expect BMW’s but to my surprise the next favoured was the humble DR – yep a Daisy variety!! If I had any doubts about whether I’d chosen the right bike or not, they were now at rest.

DSCN2497a

One poor bloke got a puncture just as he pulled into the camp ground. Out with the tools and he had the rear wheel off in no time and some mates were ready at hand to help him out with the repairs and a cold beer. As you can see there are already quite a few tents set up.

An afternoon stroll down to the opposite end on the creek and we found a nice little spot to sit and dapple our feet in the cool water.

On the way back we came across these fellas (seasoned adventurers), swapping stories over a cold beer…..not exactly the adventure stories I would’ve expected to hear….they were swapping advice on women….LOL!!! that was the funniest thing.

DSCN2526a

swapping women hints…..lol

As you can see, our peaceful camp site soon filled up and as the night went on got rowdier. Dinner was supplied (at a small cost) by the BMWTC but the laughter and the stories were free.

DSCN2528a

just a few neighbors…

At some stage some bright spark (and I suppose it’s to be expected since we are on a rally) decided to throw what I can only assume was a can into one of the many fires which exploded. This was followed with a cheer from the revellers. Of course what would the night be without the revving of engines, arguments and associated merriment.

Put another log on the fire…….way to go Karl.

DSCN2543a

On my way back from attending a nature call, I was confronted by this bubbly drunk bloke who was lost. After at least figuring out which end of the ground he camped I sent in that direction and me…I went in the other. Some strange characters emerge in the darkness and I don’t mean the Bunyips and Drop Bears either, although I’m sure they were lurking about. There was this one bloke, I didn’t even see him, laying on the ground next to the path and as I got to him he flicked on an amber torch and started serenading me…..in Swahili…LOL !!!

The morning after the night before and brekky was provided. There were many a weary sole wondering around and not to mention sore heads but nothing a bacon and egg roll wouldn’t help fix.

DSCN2553a

the morning after the night before

Time to pack up, say hoo roo to new friends, tackle the dirt road out and head on home. With Karl keeping a watchful eye on me on the dirt, I slowly but surely made it out incident free…YAY!

Not that we were looking for it but just out of Dungog towards Gresford we came across some gravel.

It’s pretty dry out there but still the scenery is spectacular.

DSCN2559a

We come down through Broke – Wollombi – Jerry’s at Kulnura before joining the freeway to home.

DSCN2566a

I stopped to get lunch for us, while Karl went home to open up the house and settle Ella-Jane. When I was replacing the cargo net to ensure our hamburgers wouldn’t fall out, Daisy decided that it’s just too much for her and she decides to have another little lay down…NOOOO. This time she fell into my body on the right side. Lucky some blokes came over to give me a hand and we were able to right her without hitting the ground. Thanks guys!!

Finally home YAY!!! Have lunch, unpack and Karl goes to move Daisy and discovers she has a flat rear tyre “no wonder she fell over, she wasn’t stable” he says…phew, I was beginning to think it was me.

What a great experience. Daisy and I both have some new character building marks/bruises. We didn’t do a lot of kilometres but had just as good a time. A BIG THANKS to Karl for being my hero and backing me in my decision to continue. I know I can conquer almost anything with you by my side.

FarRide East 28 – Nambucca 2014

Nambucca Heads = a time to see mates that I only to get to see once a year….and it’s here at this location on this FarRide, that’s enough of a reason to get out for a ride for me.

Apologies in advance there aren’t many pics this time.

Friday plan: Home-Bulga-Tamworth-Barraba-Glen Innes, easy peasy right! Yeah!  How exciting, this is Daisy’s first FarRide and I don’t know who’s more excited..lol. Local servo for fuel and off we go to hit the Putty (she handled it fabulously, BTW). Ahead of schedule so a short stop at Grey Gums Cafe and hence an early arrival at Bulga for an early lunch and that all important “start docket”- 12:01pm 31/12/14 all good!!

We are having a good run and Daisy is surprisingly comfy. Into Tamworth, it’s hot 38 degrees, I find a tree to park under and it’s time to make a phone call to some friends and check in with Karl. About 10 kays outta Manilla Daisy thought she’d gone home when we came across some cattle on the road (she is a country girl afterall 🙂

Fuel in Barraba, it’s about 36 degrees and I come across a couple of larrikins – Tony K & Gateman waiting for me in the shade just up from the servo. Been ages since I’ve seen these two cheeky buggars. After a bit of a girly freshening up, it’s hugs all round. Check Daisy’s oil levels – all good and guess what, she’s started first go all day – YEE HAW!! “On ya bike girlie, lets go ride”, yes Gatey and we are off, destination Glen Innes.

Tony K suggests we take the Delungra turn off, so I do a quick calculation and figure I can safely chop the kays to Warialda off. I’ve never headed out this way from Tamworth before and although the countryside is dry, it’s beautiful. I can’t understand why people want to go overseas, when we have such beautiful countryside right here! Anyways, the thorn between two roses…lol riding along “love it”. Into Inverell and Gatey pulls up under the shade of a sycamore tree (well not exactly but it sounds good). He decides to bail, something about his head being too big for his helmet….hmmm I’m sure that’s what he said..ROFL!!! Well, he wasn’t a happy camper so Tony K escorted me to Glen *thumbs up*.

Was about 7:20pm when we pulled into my digs and although we were going to have dinner together it was going to be too late for Tony to get home at a respectable hour, so we said our goodbyes and I checked in. I was so happy that these guys came out to see me and couldn’t have thanked them enough – you guys ROCK!!! xxxx

My first night ever camping on my own…wow!! I’m so excited!! Pick the BEST spot only to get told I have to move cos a “party” is coming in tonight. Party? Noooo, I need some sleep. Camp Kimmie all set up just as it got dark…haha, now to look for a feed. Daisy is loving this dirt and grass riding, me I’m still getting used to being able to. My two options for dinner – Maccas or KFC, I picked KFC (nothing else was open) then head back for zzzzd’s.

Just nod off and “the party” roll in just short of midnight  – Wtha! Screaming kids, barking dog and a bloody horse – seriously. 2:00am and I finally drifted off for 2 hours sleep. Up early, pack up (feeling very proud of myself) and ya know what…….paybacks a biatch! How unfortunate that Daisy MUST be warmed up with full choke before I can head off……hehehe. Lucky Karl installed the spotties cos I need’em this morning and they work just “jim dandy”!

the Sweety’s magic at work…

Thanks Sweety xx   It’s bloody cold and dark and the wildlife is out today, wallabies and roos to Armidale. Thankfully they decided Daisy was too loud for them and they went in the correct direction (away from me!).

Sunrise as I come into Armidale where I stop to change to winter gloves…brrrr and what a magnificent sight.

Check the plan and WHAT!!!!! I’m out about an hour – crap, better get a wriggle on. I’ve done this run into Bendemeer many times so catch up some time. Head east and bam “blinded by the light”! I love this section of road from Bendy to Walcha but not this morning cos I can’t see it. The sun is right in my eyes blinding me so the pace along here is slower than normal.

Walcha for fuel and I run into (not literally) Tigerbill, Wombattle & friends and Rocketman. Time for a speedy cuppa and chat to the gents, tape the top of the visor to block the sun and off again. Unfortunately, apart from two herds of cattle at separate sections of the Oxley (which didn’t hold me up too much) the 4 wheeled traffic was terrible…grrr! Anybody’d thought it was Sunday not SATDEE people. Lucky Daisy was up to the challenge of opening that envelope and performing small miracles.

Turn off to Port and head north FINALLY!! Tell you, that last stretch into Nambucca felt like it took for-ev-er……. At last the turn off – YAY, not far now and a clear, quick run down Wellington Drive into my Karl welcoming party “you’re cutting if fine Sweety” he says….no kidding Dick Tracey and I’m off the bike still with all my gear on to get to check in – FRE #28  DONE. PHEW made it! Look at the watch and have 20 minutes to spare….LOL!!

Catch up with some before they head off to finish their rides and then time to settle in for the afternoon of socialising & lunch. Throw in a swim a nana nap before some more well-earned socialising with great friends from places Far and Wide and you have the perfect day! Oh, plus a romantic walk along the wall. The day turns to night oh so quick and the lack of sleep has caught up with me. Check with me buddy Diesel about the arrangements for brekky before Karl and I hit the pillow.

Sunday morning and we are awaken by the rumble of an engine…..what a surprise LOL. The Urunga Brekky Crew assemble in the carpark and head out in formation for a relaxing brekky by the river. Thanks Diesel for organising!! We say our hoo-roos and with our friend Andy in tow start on the path home.

However, as this is my ride, naturally we have to make some “detours” – after all I am at “war” for Milday Her Majesty and have vowed to battle thru thy realm of FarLand for the White. First stop Port Macquarie, pic obtained and what a shame we have to do the Oxley again….LOL! No traffic this time and Daisy enjoys the curvaceous climb through the mottled shadows to Walcha. Fuel, acquire another pic (it’s bloody hot), lunch and it’s time to head down Thunderbolts to Gloucester.

I haven’t mentioned previously however I have developed (over the 3 days) an extremely sore hand from these gloves I have been wearing and by the time we get to the lookout I have to take an unscheduled stop. Throttle rocker on, would’ve liked a longer break but the day is slipping away. Into Gloucester and I couldn’t find the “spot”….grrr. Karl went off in the direction I thought it was while Andy and I waited in the shade at the servo. “Spot” located, blazing sunshine and heat (kinda appropriate for this token) and it’s time to flock off.

We get to the end of Buckets Way and hit the slab for home. The twin servo’s a good sight for a rest and an ice cream to recharge the battery for the final leg. We say “see ya Wednesday” to Andy (even though we are heading in the same direction but won’t be stopping again) and finally at 8:00pm we arrive home – hot and tired. FRE #28 done & dusted!

Oxley Squirt

Overnighter to Long Flat, sensational idea! Alas, it is only the 3 of us though – Karl, Paul & me. This’ll be Daisy’s first real road (teething) trip. We’ve, well Karl has done a bit to her, I’ve done the pretty stuff and think I’ve figured out the packing for a trip (in particular a camping trip) sorted.

Saturday 11th Jan 14

8:30am Saturday and we are off….woo hoo!  Plan – Fuel at Berowra (where I can’t get off the bike cos I can’t get off without her falling over – thanks Kath for holding her for me), up the Old Pac to Australian Reptile Park and then back on the Freeway to Bucketts Way. How much fun is the Old Pac on Daisy? – Awesome amounts of fun!! But the fun doesn’t last long, it’s uncomfortable L We hit the freeway and I’m squirming around like a worm.  Anyway’s finally turn onto Bucketts Way and I get off ready to go home. Karl ends up taking the swag after I’ve spat the dummy and we turn the bag around to give me back the seat space needed to be comfortable *thumbs up*.

Mount up and Daisy, she no start – crap. Karl’s already gone, Paul starts to go and realises I’ve got trouble. Anyway, there is no way she’s going to start. Finally after about 15 minutes she fires and we are off (this turns out to be an ongoing issue). I’m still fuming and it’s not getting better, the seat is now uncomfortable. Can’t fix it on the road will have to wait til Gloucester.

The usual food haunts in Gloucester are busy, so we head up to the Kik’n’bac Cafe for lunch. Flies, who ordered flies with our lunch, they are everywhere. Lunch was nothing special for the bucks we paid so we won’t be going back there.

They should have a side of "flies" on the menu...Yikes!

Fuel at the shell and unfortunately I had to turn Daisy off – bugger. Finally get her started and Karl says “you go putting up the street, we’ll catch”, ok then. With the airhawk now fixed, the luggage sorted I finally start to enjoy riding Daisy….YAY!! What a hoot and I’m into it – no sign of the fellas though *shrugs*. Into the lookout I get a couple of pics before they arrive.

I’m accused of hooning! Naturally I must’ve been right, cos they couldn’t catch me and after all I’m not on a fast bike now – it’s cruising in a bouncy kinda fashion…LOL

Assessing the clouds we decide we are possibly gonna get wet heading into Walcha. Paul and I swap bikes about 40 kays outta Walcha and not long afterwards it starts to rain…oh well, it’s not bad but we’re tough and don’t worry about wets (not required really).

The skies clear in the direction we want to head and I’m happy (thank god for that I reckon the guys are saying) and off we go to “smash the Oxley”, well to have a bit of fun anyway. Other than the straights, I surprised myself by keeping up with them. Daisy lurves the curves and she dips in here and flicks into there with a spring in her stride – it’s awesome and sooo much fun.

Heading down into Gingers Creek.

Cuppa tea at Gingers and a WOO HOO from me…happy Kimmie!!

Almost forgot we had to stop at Apsley Falls so Paul get a pic – Daisy’s first time too.

Back on track, sorry, time to go, a cold beer is a calling. Now down the exciting part of the Oxley and WOW, it’s so much fun and relatively easy going on Daisy in comparison to Angel.

Pull up at Long Flat, a cold drink, unpack and start to relax.

As you can see Karl & Paul have the beers ready and made a new friend…good to see them playing nicely with the yocals!

Great alfresco dining overlooking the river with great company, what more could you ask for really. A walk after dinner is in order so we toddle off down the road yakking away and checking out the camping down by the river wondering how they got in there. I decided to climb the resident tree and felt like a Hobbit for a moment…LOL

Our usual night cap of tea and biscuits, more tea and Pringles, beer, chatting some reading and finally it’s cooled down enough to hit the hay.

Sunday 12th Jan 14

I had a good nights sleep and it was a slow start to the morning. Paul had demanded coffee and toast on his opening of thyne eyes in the morning. So when I had toast cooking and was ignored by him (who was still in bed) bugger him and Karl had gone across to the general store for coffee (which was disappointing this time).

No rain in sight today, the sun is out, the air is crisp, Daisy started first go (she’d had a sleep afterall), the fellas are having their war of words that they have and time to go and climb that snake of a road back to Gingers.

trusty steads.

It’s a short stop, and the Power Rangers pull in not longer after we arrived so we hit the road. Let’s spoil ourselves in Walcha with a nice cuppa tea and scones! The Oxley never disappoints and the run through the top end twisties is invigorating!

Of course you have to get one of these!

cos ya have to...

cos ya have to…

Another tanty as Daisy wouldn’t start after fuelling up in Walcha and the guys had already left me for tea. 15 minutes later she starts and I have the irates something chronic. Karl goes and starts her first go after I get to the cafe and explain what happens….grrr. Yeah, well I’m disappointed again, no darn scones! WTha is going on here….it’s a conspiracy I tell you!!

On a better note, they have a new sculpture at the Walcha Cafe – the creator is truly talented.

something out of Alien???

something out of Alien???

The heat of the day is stinging already, so next stop is the lookout and then Gloucester for lunch. This time we go to Roadies Cafe (passed by previous taste tests) and there’s fans and aircon…YEAH!! The Daisy issue is really giving me the irates to the point that I just don’t want to turn her off. Finally on the way and it’s a cruisey run down Bucketts. In saying that Thunderbolts still has some good sections and some, well crappy road surface. Maybe one day they’ll complete both Bucketts and Thunderbolts, somehow I don’t think that will happen in my lifetime though.

End of Bucketts and Paul is pulled over and indicates he needs to put oil in the Rex (TRX850). So him & Karl, I thought had a plan (silly me) anyway we end up stopping at the driver reviver at the top of the Freeway home so he can add oil. Thankfully this time I was able to park in the shade. As Karl rode off and Paul started to leave, yep you guessed it, I’m still sitting there trying to get Daisy started. Paul turned around and tried to help but alas until Daisy’s ready to start, there is just no pushing her (at least this time someone else can explain to Karl what is happening or not when she gets hot). Eventually we are off and see Karl stopped down the freeway waiting for us.

Let’s get home!! Final fuel at the twin servos at Tuggerah (not for me I need to see what kays to a tank Daisy will get) but yep she won’t start again. Over it, just over it, totally ridiculous! An uneventful run down the freeway and into the drive..Yay! So glad I was to be home that I stupidly *doh* turned Daisy off “big mistake” cos Karl now had to push her up the drive in the gate…oops – sorry Sweety!!

Look, it may sound that I had a crappy time but if I was totally honest, it was a great weekend, once I sorted the luggage and seating. Ok, a major hick up with Daisy which I have no doubt Karl will sort in time but it was a teething run for Daisy. So now we know the bugs and can set to rectifying them.

For the specky people…
