SPOTWALLA for Dummies

No offence intended towards anyone.

I’m no techno savvy person and had heaps of trouble learning how to set this all up. With an enormous amount of help from OX, I finally managed to nail it.

Now with a memory like mine… “oh, look – it’s a castle” la la la “oh look – it’s a castle”, I decided to write myself some instructions.

As it turns out, I’m not the only one that has trouble with these things, so I’m happy to share my “for Dummies” instructions with you.

Parkes Muster 2016

The Inaugural IBA Australian Parkes Muster 2016 – qualifying ride for this momentous event is a SS1600. Can I do another one, in the middle of winter, is a debate that I lost with myself. After my last one in April which could’ve ended quite differently I decided that I would be of more assistance on this one behind the scenes. Although I had intended to still ride to this event, circumstances beyond my control had me attending in the car.

ROAD TRIP!!!  As I’m in no hurry, it was a late departure from home at 10am, hoping to arrive at 3pm in Parkes. That’s was the plan anyway….LOL!!

20160701_100727a20160701_100831a

Heading up Bells Line in Dougall (that’s the new car) towards Lithgow and true to form (well mine anyway whenever I travel this road), it starts raining..well sprinkling. It gets heavier then peeters off and repeats the sequence all the way. On the way up, I thought I’d stop at Hassans Lookout but with the rain I decided not today. Once out of town on onto the open road Dougall’s happy to sit on the cruise control and coast on through.

DSCN2059a

Planned lunch stop is Bathurst and you can’t not visit Mount Panorama. Dougall was just a little bit excited about going round this track (just quietly I was too..he he he). But before that lunch. On top of Skyline it’s a balmy 3 degrees LOL!! and the perfect place to have lunch.

20160701_131535a

Time to get the rest of that lap in…..ZOOM ZOOM!!!!   Well maybe not this time it’s strictly to the speed limit this time, but OMG it’s amazing!! And still 3 degrees…brrrr

DSCN2063a20160701_134001a

On the road again, time to get back on the road again…….   Through Orange, Manildra and the rain is just enough to be annoying all the way to Parkes. Just as we head out of Lucknow, Dougall clicks over his first 1000 kays – Happy Birthday Dougall!

DSCN2079a

On the outskirts of town I was looking for the “Welcome to Parkes” sign for “THAT” pic      but it wasn’t there, so thought I’d take a detour before checking in and go visit “The Dish”. You know the one that was in the movie with Sam Neil and Dan Aakroyd, well now to find it. Dougall comes self-equipped with a navigation system named Daisy. So I ask Daisy to find The Dish and WHAM…..god dang it, she did!!! Confidently I followed Daisy through the back streets of Parkes and then I turn down a country road (big mistake) it turns to dirt….not just a little bit of dirt but real slippery wet clay stuff…..ARGH!! About 8 kays down the road though I spot this in the background…Eureka!!

DSCN2090a

20160701_160757a

It’s pretty impressive!! There’s not much there though. I suppose I was expected more. In the centre there are some models of the telescope and a repica of the control panel along with some amusing stuff for kids and the all-important souvenir shop.  Anyway, it’s 4:15 and they are rushing you out the door. Poor Dougall is covered in wet dripping sticky yukky clay from our little off roading adventure…I felt really bad.

Heading back to town along the highway (which I should’ve taken in the first place) and “THAT” sign appears…..photo op.

20160701_163059a

Checked in and now to organise dinner. Tonights choice is Ikon at Gracelands, great menu and not pub food. It’s kinda based on 50’s movies stars and French chic with a fire pit and a couple of gas fires. The Wild Mushroom Sauce with housemade Veal Tortellini was absolutely fabulous and wit a glass of Sauv Blanc all went down a treat. I thought I’d have any early night and a bit of a relax, but I was too excited watching the links and FB posts of my LD motorcycle friends to sleep. At 12:10am a rider pulls into the motel, so I wonder out to great them. Don’t know this fella and here I am standing in the freezing cold in my pyjama not caring and congratulating him on completing his SS1600 for the IBA Inaugural Muster. As it turns out Anthony was more impressed with meeting Lynne The Pillion and Myself in one night…lol – go figure…

20160701_191202a 20160701_183256a 20160701_183313a

Back to bed and watching dots and posts when another rider Gadget arrives. Again out in the jammies to greet him and we have a bit of a chat but he’s just done a SS1600 also in the cold and needs to get some shut eye. Watching a couple of friends travel around out in the darkness and the cold and they both stop for a bit. As it turns out, one of my friends was in distress. I contacted him and arranged for him to go to my place where Karl would be waiting for him, with a hot shower and warm bed. Still not able to sleep, check in on my other friend travelling and thankfully his spot is now heading in the right direction…phew! Exhausted I can now finally get to sleep knowing these two guys are safe and on their way. Just a note: I have many friends on this ride but not all of them post or SPOT for you to watch.

4 hours sleep….argh! but it is what it is. Head out to wash Dougall and grab some breakky and come across Brian & Tory at the BP. After signing their witness forms, Knave, then Rob and Gaggs roll in, so I sign all their forms too. May as well have breakky with the boys and they all enlighten me about their various journeys to Parkes for this event. Off to wash Dougall now and if everyone elses vehicles weren’t as dirty if not worse than mine, I’d have been embarrassed…lol. Back to the motel to get ready for the days events.

The Oz IBA Team had accepted my offer to assist with the day and I planted myself in a chair behind a computer and proceeded to check riders in and verify their route. Ever so nervous that there would be one that would be rejected (thankfully there wasn’t). Young Nevertire Nic offered to be my photographer for the day….thank you! Since I was busy and he was off like a shot.

DSCN2107a DSCN2095a DSCN2097a

It’s always good to catch up with familiar faces and find out how everyone’s been. I had the pleasure today of meeting the infamous 10ft Red Head “Daisy” (ok, a slight exaggeration….she’s only 7ft) and her loving man Reg from Tassie. What lovely people and I look forward to catching up with them again.

DSCN2108a DSCN2104a

Back for a bit of a rest and to wait for Streak to arrive. It was such a great sight to see him pull into the driveway of the motel. As soon as Streak was ready, he, Gaggs and myself head back to the club for the remainder of the presentations. Shane “Cuddles” Cudlin gave us a good insight into how an Iron Butt Rally (IBR) is run and the gruelling efforts it takes on the preparation and the team. He showed us some fine photos, including some stunners of Lady Cuddles……lol.  Nevertire Nic offered to be photographer for the night but seems he hit the video button instead of camera button, so I don’t have any pics from the night and the video is very blurry. Think he moght need some more practice 🙂

I must say though, the meals at the Parkes Services Club are pretty darn good and huge servings.

Sunday morning meeting at the club before the, well ride (or drive in my case) out to The Dish for the group photo and breakfast. TJ has everyone line the street as he provides instruction or the ride out. It’s a wonderful sight seeing all the bikes and riders together.

Out at the Dish we have to wait to get through the gate, before assembling for the group photo and photos of photo grabbers and just great friends.

But it doesn’t take long before those not staying for breakfast decide to get going. Some are going straight home, some are going on great adventures and well some are just going for a ride. Now there is one person that I had been told dislikes having their pic taken and you rarely get to capture this persons face….but this morning I managed the almost impossible. I captured a partial facial shot of the infamous 10ft Redhead Daisy. I also know that I am sooooo going to pay for this when I next see her…………

20160703_083030a

Is that a smile I see Daisy????? he he he

Breakfast before heading off.  Now on the way out, I noticed a sign on the start or is that the finish of that awful road I managed to take yesterday……….

20160703_090700a

20160703_093907a

A quick call to Karl to let him know I’m on my way and can’t wait to get home. It’s pretty uneventful all the way to Lithgow where I decide to stop for lunch. Onnies was the spot today….a quaint little café on the main street. The food was fabulous but the coffee, well, should come with a warning tag…..”undrinkable”. Note to self….don’t buy coffee here again.

Unfortunately, all the numbknuckles decided they wanted to take Bells Line of road too. Needless to say it was a slow and frustrating trip down the hill. Finally back home to Karl and Ella-Jane which is always a wonderful way to end a trip.

Almost forgot…….some more pics.

FRE #40 Moree – Anniversary Ride

All weather reports for the weekend were not particularly pleasant in fact they were downright awful. Friday is a late start by FarRide status at 2pm (replicating the first FarRide by our founder David “Davo” Jones) and thankfully it’s a nice afternoon.

Easy plan – up the M1 to Nabiac for fuel, then heading onto the BP Donut Port Macquarie for dinner. A U-turn then head back to Forster to stay at the in-laws at Foster. Rode to the plan and arrived on schedule at 7:40pm to a warm welcoming and house. Thanks Nana & Poppa for the wonderful hospitality again.

20160617_175935a Manning River

On the road @ 5:40am on Saturday in the darkness and thankful yet again for the spot lights on Dudley. What a lovely morning, and no traffic just a little chilly pulling in to Wauchope for fuel. Might as well add an extra layer as I could see the mist heading into the distance towards Long Flat.

That mist, made me feel like I was riding into a mystical moment in a fairytale.

Long Flat Mist

What a clear run up the mountain!! Not a car in sight, had the entire road to myself (this doesn’t happen very often). You could tell that there had been rain at some time, probably overnight as The Oxley was a little damp. Tested out Dudleys new setup but couldn’t really give it a good workout as was just a little too damp to get really into it. Still heaps mucho improved from the previous – thanks Sweety.

A quick stop at Gingers Creek for a photo op and got 10 drops of rain….oops outta here!!.

Gingers Creek Gingers Creek 1

Out the top end and I could just watch the bad weather rolling in or should I say I was rolling into it!! Turn right at Walcha and it starts to rain – typical. Uralla for fuel and a hot chocky and it’s teaming down. Frank & Maye are parked under shelter donning their wet gear and I give them a wave. Up the goat track that is Thunderbolts Way though Bundarra and not far outta Gilgai come across another rider. Happens to be Crappy who pulled over to stretch his legs – wave g’day and I keep going.

Left at Inverell and it’s the home stretch into Moree. Open flat fields, plenty of road kill – BIG roos and BIG pigs are scattered either side of the road. Didn’t realise how many pigs were out that way….even little piggy wiggy’s were strewn along the road side. Come across a sleeping MildThing taking a break in a bus shelter just outta Warialda. Thought about stopping down the road and walking back to take a sneaky photo (but that would be a little mean), so kept going…..dammit, I should’ve got the pic. Gravesend and all these photos I wanted to take but didn’t. The ground was just too soft for me to stop on the verges or venture off the road without getting into strife and no photo is really worth that.

Moree

Rolled in to a wonderful welcoming at Thomas Lee Motorcycles, where I promptly stopped and asked “where’s my valet?”…..LOL…..which I did get about 15 minutes later 🙂

Was first to check-in and now time to say HI to everyone, meet some new people, have some lunch and get some photos.

20160618_140846a DSCN2019a DSCN2021a

The time goes too quickly and riders soon start to head off to finish their ride while the remainder of us are hanging around for the Anniversary dinner tonight at the Dragon restaurant. I must say though, I had the pleasure of meeting Lisa (daughter to FarRider Rob) who attended her first FarRide this weekend and is on her “P’s”. Well done girlfriend and you have exceptional taste in riding gear too!! 🙂

A quick splash in the thermal pools…well it wasn’t too quick – what an experience. Shared some stories with others taking advantage of these wonderful pools. The water is sensational, need to get me one those artesian pools at home for the aches and pains……so therapeutic!!

Socialising upstairs in the restaurant before dinner is fabulous. My riding friends are wonderful people and you really appreciate the effort every single one of us goes to to attend these ride-to-eats. For most of us, it’s the only time we get to see each other, grab a hug and swap adventures and stories. And for this, tonight we had a warm room to do this in and great food to fill our bellies

20160618_175514 (2)a

A presentation, tribute was given by Ghosty honouring our founder Davo. I never had the pleasure of meeting Davo, but couldn’t help but have “Respect” for this man. Davo created this wonderful place called FarRiders for us to enjoy our motorcycling to places Far and Wide in this great land of ours.

Further discussion continued to which I chose not to partake an adjourned for an early night.

Wish I could say I had a good nights sleep, but with the presence of bad weather leering in the nights sky, it made for an uncomfortable night. Just after 3am, I heard Gaggs moving around outside then depart, then Frog, and I dropped back for a little bit. Just after 5am, Shannon left and I couldn’t see the point in going back to sleep. Packed and ready, I say goodbye to Rosco, Biggles & MildThing the only others I saw up and then head off. It had been raining and was sprinkling as I left dark Moree heading south towards home.

DSCN2047a DSCN2050a

Down the road a wee bit I overtake Frans and continue on, seems we have the same route to get home. Not long and Rosco is behind me and the three of us obviously have great minds. So a new FarVoy is formed as we head down the Newell for Narrabri, then Gunnedah, Quirindi before stopping for breakky at Murrurundi, oh and fuel. The Murrurundi Shell Roadhouse as Rosco had advised serves great raisin toast and has bottomless tea & coffee, but this morning hot chocolate was my preference. As Frans, Rosco and I decide to get going the heavens literally opened up and thought it would test out the new KLIM riding gear.

I wish I could say it was a pleasant ride down the New England Hway but it was bloody awful. You could barely see a couple of cars length in front of you and with my visor fogging up continually, I had no choice but to leave my visor open a frazzle. Too bad this also lets in the bombarding rain which then leaves droplets hanging from the bottom of my glasses and dripping off my nose. Onto the Hunter Expressway and I swear the rain is getting heavier and at Maitland we wave hoo-roo to Rosco…Frans and I continue to surf our way down the M1. Into the twin servo at Wyong and Frans pulls in just as I finish fuelling up. I didn’t dear even try to take my gloves off, they were soo wet I’d have never gotten them back on. Frans and I leave the servos together in the pouring rain which is still atrocious but we are soon parted as the traffic is heavy and the conditions awful.

Finally home @ 2pm, yes, it’s still raining and Karl opens the shed door to let me inside.

More pics from the Saturday.

Collage

See you on the next adventure.

FRE #39 Lobethal SA

And I’ve done it again….forgot to reset the camera date after daylight savings……argh!!!

Moving on…. Friday the 13th for the start of a FarRide……what could possibly go wrong J well, one just has to wonder.

Starting from Yass for this one and it was a cool windy trip to the Service Centre where I ordered lunch & my riding staple hot chocolate. Just sat down and Rob & Knave pull in. A chat over our lunch while waiting for the clock to tick over and we had the same plan just a different night stopover and the guys let me tag along with them. Extra layers on and a start docket of 12:37 and we are off. We have a Far Convoy.

As the sun starts its decent it’s a killer on the eyes. Into Gillenbah for fuel, a snack and comfort stop. My mum and dad are visiting in Narrandera and while I felt a little guilty not calling them, we were on the clock (and I didn’t want to hold the guys up).

There’s been a bit of rain in the area and I was ever watchful for wildlife that may have thought drinking near the side of the road was a good idea.

As the sun goes down ….in a western NSW town the bugs come out for the evening. I swear I had half the flying population splattered over my visor. Stopping at South Hay wasn’t on the plan but was necessary and as we rounded the roundabout I see Triple Treat & a new friend Michael….gotta stop now.

Visor clean and off again heading for Hell’s Gate and hopefully a sunset pic. Luckily I didn’t see any wildlife and got a pic.

DSCN1907a

I was glad to get to the Caltex Roadhouse on the outskirts on Balranald where we all re-grouped and wished each other well before heading off again. Checked in, rang Karl and messaged Frans as I didn’t know if he got acco in town and I had a spare bed. Spotted Michael while I was having dinner and after discussion about docket times, determined that he could have a “Diesel predicament” so he was going to see what he could do about not being a DNF statistic. Well done mate – glad you finished!

Frans and I are out slightly ahead of my plan into the mornings darkness with all lights blazing. Through Tooleybuc and onto the Mallee Highway heading west for South Australia. We pass Rob & Knave before Pinnaroo where we stop for fuel and breakfast. Gaggs arrives, a quick hello and hug (of course) and he is off.

DSCN1910a

Of what a beautiful morning, oh what a beautiful day….. only 1 bouncer crossed our path earlier in the morning. We all have our own exercise regime on the bike and here’s Frans doing some of his.

DSCN1919a

Me, I opted for a selfie….lol   I’d already done some stretching.

DSCN1920a

What’s a FarRide without roadworks and the end of the Mallee Hway has some road repairs going on. Here was this massive workhorse on the side of the road, he had some friends helping him.

DSCN1923a

Tailem Bend comes and goes and I think of Triple Treat and whether he’d be out of bed or still sleeping after his huge ride. Now my GPS had me following the A1 – Princes Hway but as I was planning on going straight ahead, Father Frans waves me in to follow him through Murray Bridge. Glad I did cos the scenery was magnificent but the wind came from nowhere.

DSCN1931 (2)a

Meandering through the lush hills dotted with dairy farms and rolling hills with huge rock formations and gusty winds made for an interesting road to Lobethal. I still had the camera around my neck but alas I couldn’t take my hands off the bars to take any pics 🙁

Arriving in Lobethal, bikes are lined up on both sides of the street and smiles are everywhere.

DSCN1941a

Time to go check-in at the Bierhaus where Jeffthechef and his team are creating culinary delights for hungry FarRiders.

DSCN1945 (2)aDSCN1943a

G’days, hugs, how ya goin’s are going on everywhere before Fatman assembles us for the group photo and we all start to disseminate. Yes, the time goes by too quickly and it’s now time to start heading home. A quick consultation with Rob & Knave (since we are all staying in Tooleybuc for the night) and the guys decide to follow me through the back hills into Sedan. I’m kicking myself now for not having the camera round my neck for my on the fly pics cos the countryside is absolutely gob smackingly, breathtakingly gorgeous! WOW! Somewhere up the road Rob pulls up for a power nap and then Kanve and I pull in so I can take some layers off and have a break.

DSCN1947a

Into Yamba for “that” pic, fuel and to wait for Rob. Well we didn’t have to wait too long and he rolled on in (sure you had a nap mate?). A snack break and off we go heading for Mildura.

DSCN1948a

DSCN1950 (2)a

As the sun starts to lower in the sky, we roll into South Merebein where this car starts flashing it lights and people are waving their arms at me. Instant feeling, Mr Plod, but hang about, it’s Ron & Marls 🙂 here to great us. Awesome guys what a wonderful surprise!!! Love that about the riding we do!

20160514_173844a

Anyhoos, we can’t stop long cos we still have a way to go and I don’t know the roads I’ve planned. Mildura for a fuel stop for the boys but I still have to stop at Robinvale otherwise I won’t be able to leave Tooleybuc in the morning.

Off we go into the deep dark night with lights again blazing. Rob stopped with me in Robinvale while Knave kept on going. Now my plan had me turning left at Robinvale and following the river, however, Rob offered to lead and his lights are fabulous and his GPS had us going straight ahead. A bit down the road and we stop, both our GPS’s are having conniptions but I was about 40% certain that this road would lead us to some town starting with Mantanganbang or something like that. Now this isn’t the greatest road at night, it’s narrow, blind corners, no road markings and plenty of flora and who knew how much fauna. We stop a couple more times to consult and I assure Rob this will lead us to the right place. It’s here I reset my route and aloe and behold it told me we were going the right way….PHEW!! Taking a little detour (which I know I’m famous for) wasn’t on the cards for tonight. Finally we hit the Mallee Hway at Manangatang turn L and head to Tooleybuc.

Exhausted, hungry and tired, I checked in and Ron (motel manager) had already rung the pub and asked them to keep the kitchen open cos the riders had all just arrived. How lovely!!! Only in a country town.

Feed and watered, we discussed our plans for Sundays ride home and said our goodnights.

I decided to just sleep until I woke (hoping for a bit of a sleep in) but was awake at 5:30am just before Rob & Knaves bikes spurred to life for the morning and they headed home.

Home today and to my Sweety and via a road that I have wanted to travel for 6 years. I first learned of this road from Lady Mel & Chicky on my very first FarRide to Euston….. the Kyalite-Moulamein Rd. It’s a beautiful warm, clear night (well dark morning) and I’m looking forward to heading home.

How can you not enjoy riding / discovering new roads when you have views like this…..

20160515_064654a

Ever watchful for wildlife at this time and not long afterwards a mid size grey macropod bounds across in front of me….fist full of break and I just miss his tail…phew!!

There’s nothing like watching the day come to life…..with long roads and magnificent skies how can you go wrong?

DSCN1939a

Just before Pretty Pine the farmers have their herds out grazing the verges…….hundreds and hundreds of cows crossing the road or wait, stopped in the middle of the road. Think they are just as curious in me as I am with them.

DSCN1964a

Into Deniliquin for the breaky of champions…well weary homesick motorcyclists anyway. A quick stop for “things on poles” pic before heading off.

DSCN1969a

I’d discussed with Karl and debated with myself about stopping to visit Lady Mel on the way through. I wanted to be home at a reasonable time and knew the visit could add upto 2 hrs to the trip. But whatha heck!! How often do I get to see Mel and how many visitors does she get….besides I couldn’t live with the guilt that I’d not said hello when I was only 1 street from her. Next stop Urana.

DSCN1973aDSCN1975a

A phone call and message to Lady Mel and in no time her and Star had come out to say g’day and the take-away shop. An hour went by so quickly and Mel understood that I had to get going. Hugs and good byes and I was on the road again.

Blue skies, a slight breeze and lovely riding temperature, what more could you ask for! Wagga Wagga comes into view and a debate whether to stop for fuel or chance making it to Gundagai. Let’s live on the wild side…..lol. The reserve light starts flashing 22km from Gundagai (and I’m not real sure if I’m going to make it). The service centre sign put a smile on my face and the fears on running out of fuel dissipate as I pull up next to a pump.

Now that Dudley has a full tummy, I need one. Armed with a sandwich and water, I find a nice spot in the shade to sit, have lunch and a bit of a rest. Probably stopped longer that I should’ve but just needed a break.

DSCN1981a

The long highway stretch home is never something I enjoy….it seems to take forever, but then there is also that edge of anticipation about seeing my Sweety again. A few Mr Plods are sitting along the way but none have any reason to be interested in me.

Pheasants Nests and the final stop before home. Can’t wait to get off, my butt is seriously screaming at me (Dudleys seat even with the airhawk, I’m still not finding that happy toochey place).

20160515_164039

Of course you cannot finish a ride without the Cherry Ripe. Unfortunately, I was soooo hungry it didn’t all didn’t quite make the photo….lol

20160515_165112a

Riding into a setting sun and Sydney Sunday traffic – fabulous! NOT. Drivers I’m sure take stoopid pills at this bewitching hour (as the light starts to fade and the darkness creeps in) cos seriously they cannot drive. Speed limits and road rules become a “what-ev-er” by the “who gives a drivers” so taking the normal route tonight wasn’t on the cards, so I stuck to the M7/M2. Not that I think it was any better but at least I didn’t have to worry about some bugger not seeing me stopped at lights or in traffic.

Into the drive after a very long day @ just after 6pm – YAY!!! Hi Sweety I’m HOME!!

A total of 2946.5 km for the 3 days riding…not a bad effort. Dudley is now due for his next service @ 21,500 km and hopefully his new parts have arrived ready to be installed for his next adventure.

God I love riding!!!

Ethan’s Heart Ride – SS1600

Ethan’s Heart Ride – SS1600

Who is Ethan & Why a “Heart” Ride?  Ethan is a young man, who at the age of 11 endured extensive heart surgery for a condition he was born with. He is a FarRider and I am pleased to also call him a friend. He wanted to complete an IBA Ride entry level being a SS1600 (not the sort of “things to do” on most kids wish lists), as a reward for coming through with flying colours. So with his step dad Ed they hatched the “Ethan’s Heart Ride”.

An invitation was opened up to all long distance riders who wanted to accompany Ed & Ethan for the SS1600 or to join in along the way….How could I refuse!!

Photos in this report are courtesy of all those who attend and shared in this ride.

Anyway, witness forms are all signed – thanks Kathleen and our start dockets safely tucked away we assembled for the group photo….a very momentous occasion. 03:26am ODO 16,663km

Piloting the Victory is Ed with his eager pillion and reason for this ride Ethan. It’s close to 3:30am

Watching the moon go down and the sun rise up of what seems to be the start to a very long day is a magical moment. Lights are a blaze as we all snake our way through to Mudgee and then Dunedoo for our first fuel stop. It’s brrrr and some us don extra layers. We are ahead of schedule and the servo isn’t open yet, so we have some time to kill. Mad dash to the loos and a muesli bar. Fuelled up, docket 07:21am – ODO 16,968km

My GPS fails in Dunedoo after assuring the guys I’m ok we keep moving. Little do they realise I can get lost in a circle yet they kindly, blindly let me lead.  Somewhere along this stretch we come across a grazing herd of cattle, scattered everywhere and watching us with wide eyes…yikes! It’s warming up thankfully to what is going to be a lovely day.

Into Coonamble for fuel, docket, peel of some layers and a bite to eat. The GPS is still not working and Frans was astonished to discover that he followed me (the woman who is known for taking little detours) who had no idea where she was going….LOL 🙂   Quick call to tech support Karl with a “what am I supposed to do”…..   After some help from OX and Sarge we decide the best course of action is to ditch my GPS and OX has generously loaned me his spare – thank you!!!!!   09:24am – ODO 17,159

Up through the Pilliga then Wee Waa, well I’ve never in my entire life seen some much animal carnage. Dead roos were everywhere!! It was almost like they lined the whole stretch of road for us…gruesome. Finally turning at the top left of the heart and heading for Narrabri.

20160423_105125a

Imagine seeing this in the middle of nowhere but of course you have to stop. It’s so dry, if anyone flicked a butt or match…poof it’d all go up in flames in a heartbeat.

Towns come and go and with no music through the GPS, the old mind starts to wonder. You don’t realise how much these little things make to your mindset and help keep you focused but also distracted from the onset of fatigue, the pain you’re experiencing.

Into Narrabri and what a welcome surprise to see Clint and Charleen waiting for us (sneaky buggers you are). Fuel again, docket 11:55am – ODO 17,349km recorded, parked up and time for lunch.

20160423_120239a

Ethan thinks he’s ready for a ride and decided Frans bike is just for him……and the smile on his face never waned.

Ethan on Frans Bike

There’s excitement, smiles and weariness on faces including mine. The Sarge and I kept checking in with each other (we kinda had our own buddy thing happening). We even took a little nap together in Narrabri….sometimes you just have to give in.

Sleeping Kimmie

The rest ended so soon and we were back out on our quest to make this little man’s heart whole.

Clint and Charleen went ahead and took pics and video – thanks guys!!

EthanHR11Kimmie-L

Along this stretch I discovered that I could still get radio through my scala so tuned something, anything in to break the silence.

Into Tamworth to the smiling faces of Rod “Triple Treat” and Rosco who have come out to ride with us to Bellingen. Well and truly tired now and dark clouds are looming. Rod says “you should layer up, it’s gonna get cold heading to Armidale”. Turns out we are regrouping in Armidale anyways. Docket 14:53pm – ODO 17,523 km.

20160423_150329a

Sarge, clearly still has plenty of energy!!!

20160423_150341a

Tele, OX, Ethan, Hackle & Ed.

You can feel the drop in temperature not long out of Tamworth and the skies mood, well, you could watch it change. I was wishing I’d put the extra layers on before we left cos by the time we got to Armidale I was freezing, my shoulders were crying out and my arse, well, I could’ve sworn it was bruised. But I still had a smile on my face.

IMG_20160423_163717_zpswazbcr4i-XL

Me, Frans and Sarge.

Night descended on us oh so quickly and before long it was all lights blazing. The skies mood also seemed to change as she (I can only assume the sky is a woman) cried many many tears on us, in the dark on the most technical section of road for the entire ride – Waterfall Way. Croc picked us up at Ebor and joined the convoy.

This road is heaven in daylight but at night in the rain…no thanks. I followed Sarge who followed a string of single red lights as we all snaked our way through the twists and turns down to Bellingen. Was a relatively good run with the exception of this dope in a car who thought it would be fun to tailgate us. Thanks Ed for holding him off by butt for a bit. Impatience really didn’t get him that far cos we pulled up behind him just outta town.

Triple Treat and Rosco waved us through and goodbye, good night.

So much concentration is required in the dark, the rain and the pain adds another dimension.

Urunga is the next stop 18:59pm – ODO 17,811 km and we are met by OX’s family – The Hogans. It was lovely to meet you!  I remember having conversations with people but I’m really not sure what I said or whether it was coherent.

20160423_191606a

That bright shining light is Gaggs….LOL 🙂

From here it is the worst stretch of road – the freeway to Port Macquarie. All the road works, the varying speed limits…up, down, up, wait – speed camera….like we were doing anything over it. No radio anymore, I couldn’t get my fingers to work let alone find the tiny buttons on my scala, so it was silence except for the wind noise and the rain.

The service station at Coolongolook couldn’t come along quick enough in my books and I couldn’t get off Dudley quick enough. Fuel, docket 22:06pm – ODO 18,055 km and food, well not real food, a corn jack and hot chocolate was what I decided on. OX and I had a chat about the pain and decided that taking anything now for it was going to be a recipe for disaster and I return his GPS – Thanks You!  The round table discussion, on what, I have no idea, I can’t remember…..ha ha ha

IMG_1838-L

I go to the bathroom and when I come out everyone but Ed and Ethan have gone. It’s the last leg, the hardest leg, the longest leg when you feel like there is nothing left in the tank. It’s raining on and off has been all night and doesn’t make it any easier. Ed knows I’m struggling and suggests I follow him, let him set the pace. I’m very grateful! We catch up to Gaggs and Sarge and all travel through together. It seems to take forever and ever and ever but finally we are on the home stretch – The Great Western Highway into Penrith.

Can you believe we got breath tested 1km from the finish….LOL     Yeah, bizarre!
Officer: are you all traveling together ma’am? Have you had any alcohol tonight?
Me: Yes love and we’ve had no alcohol (with a slight laugh in my voice).
Officer: big smile on his young face. .can you please say you name & DOB.
Me: answered question
Officer: have a good day.
If he only knew 🙂

Back to the Woolworths servo in Kingswood for the final docket and finish the ride Sunday 24th 01:56 – ODO 18,359 km

Sarge we made it!!!

20160424_015827a

What a 24hrs! SS1600 Completed. Stats tomorrow or is that today. GPS shat itself at Dunedoo so just have kms on dockets & the Spot tracker. In bed, time for some zzzzzzzz’s. Nighty night world!

Total for the ride by the ODO – 1696km

Finally……………………….

Congrats Ethan on completing your SS1600 and to everyone who joined in on this event.

From one member of Ethan’s Convoy, I was extremely proud to have been a part of this momentous ride (from start to finish). What a courageous little man you are and I am humbled to be among one of your “friends” and road “family”.

Well what can I say, WOW!!! What a Ride!!!
I was very glad to get home this morning at silly o’clock and climb into my bed. My last IBA ride was 6 years ago and I’d forgotten how hard it actually is. The games the mind plays and fatigue and pain your body endures certainly tells you “what you are made of” or “not”. I have a bit of both, learned some more things about my riding and about myself.

Most important though was the support and help from everyone on the ride.  Makes the world of difference!!

Huge THANKS to Ed for pulling this all together and riding the perfect plan even though we were ahead of schedule at times, it was good to have the time to STOP and maybe have a little kip (even if it was on the concrete against the ice machine  ) sometimes you just need to. Oh and Ed, GREAT planning, convenience of not having to do u-turns is always a bonus in my books (since I’m not that great at them 🙂 ).

What fabulous support from those that joined in along the way to ride with us   Thank you.
Clint & Carleen, the pics and video are fabulous thank you! Was such a surprise to see you at Narrabri.

I think we (Sarge and me) both knew it was going to be a little harder for us than some of the others. It did take it’s toll…..and I probably shudda stopped at Coolongolook – that last leg to Kingswood was my nightmare. I think we rode most of the way together, either me behind Sarge for visa versa, just to keep an eye on each other (it could’ve all just been coincidence too, but I’d like to think otherwise).

Mustn’t forget – THANK YOU to Kathleen, Ethans mum. She came out to sign witness forms, provided breakfast before heading off and breakfast or is that dinner and signed more forms when we all arrived back. You are a special lady! and Ed & Ethan are very lucky men.

Holiday Ride: Day 8 Merimbula-Home

Oh no! It’s our last day of holidays today and time to head home. But not before having a lovely home cooked breakfast with a lovely view!

20160323_082753a

Packed up and ready to go, this time I put the camera round my neck so I can take pics along the way. Sunshine and lollipops today folks 🙂

DSCN1877a

There’s a few cars on the road today, which I hadn’t expected. It’s such a nice morning for a ride though!

We just meander round the coast road taking a few pics along the way

DSCN1883a DSCN1882a DSCN1884a

…..how lovely and blue is the sky. You take a deep breath and smell the sea air, the freshness…it’s great!

Until just out of Bermagui we are stopped in traffic before the bridge. There was a ute on the other side which had caught fire and had some gas bottle on the back which were exploding. Guess we’ll just stop here a little while. The SES were there and the guys with the ute were down and back to the water with buckets to douse the fire. The fire went out and heaps of smoke was in the air.

DSCN1891a

May as well take pics while wondering around

DSCN1894a DSCN1890a

The traffic on the north side started coming through so when they cleared Karl and I headed north (only for me to cop a mouth full of abuse from some dude on the bridge). Apparently it was ok for the north to cross but not us..whatever.

Back to it and in and out of small towns, speed zones changing and the traffic getting heavier. There’s no stopping today, so how when you are going home, you just want to get there and don’t take the time you do on other days. These are on the move pics.

DSCN1876a DSCN1896a

There is a bit of this happening

DSCN1898a

Karl asked in Batemans Bay had Dudleys reserve light comes on? And did I want to stop for fuel this side or the other of town….. No his light wasn’t on and the otherside of town would be fine. As it turned out just as we cross the bridge out of Batemans Dudleys light started to flash. I thought we’d stop just outta town but no we kept going….Ulladulla is 50 kays, not sure I’ll make that (haven’t pushed his reserve that far before).

Anyway,  stop at Termeil BP (turn off to Bawley Point) where we both fuel up and decide to have lunch (377.2km to that tank with 1.5lt remaining).

20160323_122713a

It’s really getting warm now and take of the cardi and down a bottle of water.

Ulladulla rolls by and as we pass through Milton I think of a friend of mine who is looking for land down here (hope they find something). Town after town and school zone after school zone and the ever increasing traffic. Nothing much changes, people in cars still drive around with their eyes closed at times (not everyone) and you have to be on your guard. Roadworks from Berry through to Kiama make for slow motoring but when the road eventually opens (maybe not in my lifetime) it will be great.

Straight down the highway and into Sydney traffic. King Georges Road is a nightmare. Blazing heat and bumper to bumper makes for a very long last leg to get home. Karl peeled off at West Ryde to take some back way but I stayed on Lane Cove Rd and hoped it would just keep moving…even if slow.

Anyway for a change I beat Karl home (not that it’s a race) and was glad to get out of my gear.

In the door at 4pm…..home sweet home!!!

Thank you Sweety for a wonderful holiday!! We should do it again.

For those interested in the stats

Holiday Ride: Day 7 Merimbula

Had a terrible nights sleep 🙂 Karl’s snoring or as he likes to refer to it as “pussy purring” was more like a damn lion roaring all night. Anyhoos, up for breaky in the main lodge with a lovely view of the lake….you couldn’t ask for a better start.

What to do today??? First world problems….lol

The sun’s out…YAY, Karl suggests we go for a ride – sure.

We decide to head out onto the Snowy Mountain Highway to a section of road, again that we haven’t done nearly enough of. The roads are dry today and the scenery is luscious and green (no doubt with all the rain we’ve had) and we have a little bit of a play. There are roads works in three sections though which hold us up a bit but not to worry after all, we have all the time in the day.

We decided to go “up the Brown” today…..lol. Dudley’s liking this road too….we are into it but there are sections that are a bit bumpy and which totally unsettle his suspension.

20160322_113100a

Stopped at the lookout and reflected on the fun we just had…..he he he

20160322_114359a 20160322_114136a

After you’ve gone “up the Brown”, you naturally have to go “down the Brown” and as you reach the bottom you wash off in Brown Creek….lol!!!! Seriously, it’s a great road and the Brown Mountain is definitely a road you should have on the list of roads to ride (just hope you have a good run like we did).

Lunch in Tathra – hot chippies for me and a calamari burger for Karl overlooking the beach. It was just a bit too windy to go down (the thought of sand in my lunch just wasn’t appealing).

20160322_125706a

We head back to Merimbula and I do a little bit of window shopping and sus out somewhere for dinner tonight, while Karl goes back to have a lazy afternoon nap.

At the bottom of the drive to Robyn’s Nest there’s this little pond….it’s so peaceful (well maybe not coming down in first gear, it’s pretty steep) but it’s a lovely spot. There’s a family of duckies that live there and were out for their afternoon stroll. Just quietly, I’m sure there is more than one ducky family that lives here.

20160322_150752a

Off to Ritzy’s Tapas Bar for dinner tonight. The reviews are great, so here’s hoping it lives up to it!!

Sorry there aren’t a lot of pics today but I left the camera (which I normally hang around my neck while I ride) back at the cottage……doh!

Oh, BTW – Ritzy’s tapas Bar and grill was great! A good selection on the sharing plate, a cocktail each and topped off with a nice coffee.

Holiday Ride: Day 6 Bairnsdale-Merimbula

It’s so easy to get used to sleeping in, eyes open, morning Sweety…ahhh it’s 8am….noice!

Stepping back in time again in the dining room for breakfast at The Riversleigh. The old time dining music in the background with the settings, you could close your eyes and pretend you’re back in the 30’s dressed to the nines for a formal breakfast…yes Madam.

Again this morning the sky is a yukky grey colour and I’m hoping that it won’t rain but those hopes are dashed pretty soon as the rain comes down.

DSCN1830a

It’s been raining for a while, there’s a lot of water on the roads as we follow the coast road through to Lakes Entrance (I hadn’t been there before).

DSCN1832a

The patches of blue between the grey are there you just have to find them. The rain stopped for a while and in Lakes Entrance the sun came out but we weren’t stopping for photos. As you can see from the pics below the time difference between the changes in weather isn’t long and it was pretty much like this all day.

DSCN1836aDSCN1842a

Into Orbost for fuel and because of the weather we decide not to do the Bonang. Better to be safe than sorry. It’s not so much the road itself but the 2 sections of dirt/gravel which could potentially be slippery mud – no thanks. So it’s off to Cann River for a comfort stop and little break….I tell you this holiday stuff is hard work J. Found a place named after me…..”Great Relics”  LOL!!!

DSCN1843a DSCN1844a

Up the Cann River Rd and the intermittent rain gets pretty heavy at times and once again I am wet all the way through and with the wind I am getting pretty cold. Heading for Bombala for lunch and the skies turn blue again but there is no heat in them unfortunately and I’m looking forward to lunch and a warm drink. This time I put my wet weather jacket over the top and take off the wet cardigan. Karl, mind you is still bone dry…how does he do it??

DSCN1849a

Onto Mt Darragh Rd. we haven’t done this section of road for I can’t remember when. But alas, the road is so wet and slippery, there’s no hooking into the wonderful bends and curves on this one. Dudleys rear steps out a couple of times which totally unnerved me so I back of completely and just basically putt round and down the mountain.

I told Karl we have to have scones and tea at this place just outside of Pambula called “Oaklands”, sure he says lead the way. The scones with fresh cream and jam are absolutely DE-LIS-CIOUS!!!! It’s worth the stop for either lunch or just a tea or coffee. There’s an art gallery, brewery & little store of cottage things…noice.

20160321_142945a 20160321_143511a

Not far now and we are into Merimbula and locate our “Luxury on the Lake” at Robyn’s Nest Boutique Resort.

Checked in, park the bikes up and settle in. the setting here is magnificent!! It’s nestled in at the bottom of a hill (just out of town) right on the lake. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with Australian Native flora and the birds just remind you that you are settled into nature. It’s wonderful.

20160321_160612a 20160321_160530a 20160321_153611a DSCN1853a

Karl and I go for a lovely afternoon stroll around the grounds and down to the jetty.

DSCN1864a DSCN1862a DSCN1856a DSCN1854a DSCN1870a

Karl has been dieing for a spicy meal since we left home and has lucked out every night. So, tonight he found this little Thai restaurant in the back streets of town and that’s where we had dinner. It’s not much to look at, but, I tell you the feed was amazing. Happy Karl 🙂

Back to cottage to top the night of with the remaining glasses of our Wild Brumby Pear Schnapps

20160321_192720a

Nighty night.

Holiday Ride: Day 5 Bairnsdale

Yawn, yawn!! Hi Sweety, is it time to get up, already. What a wonderful nights sleep, in a comfy bed that Karls feet don’t hang out the bottom of. Fluffy pillows and plush doonas and throws….feeling like royalty. Down to the dining room (said in a posh voice, please) for a lovely breakfast before going for a morning walk around town.

You don’t see these everyday of the week

DSCN1823a

We passed by the church St Marys (which is being restored)

DSCN1824a

Now I think Karl has been keeping a secret from me……….a sporting store???

hmmm

hmmm

Since we are in such a romantic place, we thought we’d stop by the local court house…..

20160320_120926a

Then finishing our morning stroll with the Mitchell River Walk…which funnily enough runs alongside the river.

DSCN1826a DSCN1827a

What to do now? Catch up on some blogging, Karl’s reading his kindle….then what?

Check out the map and decide we could meet our friends participating in the Black Dog 1 Day Ride in Maffra around 2pm….sounds like a plan. Message Hackle and Mick (Fatman) & Lynne (LTP) to let them know that we’ll meet them after we’ve had lunch. Karl was looking forward to having a spicy Moroccan chicken homemade pie which turned out to be just a plain old beef pie in fancy pastry…..he was very disappointed.

Down the main drag and just on an hour later (after a little geographical error) we arrive at The Maffra Shed, where we are met by our very wonderful friends Hackle, Fatman & LTP at the finish of the Black Dog Ride.

20160320_141445a 20160320_140346a

Time goes to fast and we are off. Graham says “follow me” and I’ll take you a more scenic and fun way back to town. Well he wasn’t wrong. I have no idea where we went but the scenery was a green as green can be, with cows either side of the road. The road surface had a bit of everything, nice bitumen, sealed country roads and gravel. Unfortunately somewhere along the way, I picked something up in the rear tyre and wondered why I couldn’t turn a corner……a flat rear…drat!!

But, never fear, I have my “Knight’s in Motorcycle Gear” with me!!!! Silly me left my puncture repair kit back in the room, luckily the guys both have theirs and a magic little compressor to get the job done. Thanks guys!!! You are my heroes!!!

20160320_154734a

Graham leads us back into town and gives us a tip for dinner before heading off himself back home as he has an early morning tomorrow. Again we thank him for his wonderful hospitality and wish him a safe journey tomorrow and I’ll see you soon in anther FarAway location.

Dinner was at the Bairnsdale Club, which was a bargain fabulous feed.

Back for another night of luxury and a chillax.

Holiday Ride: Day 4 Granya – Mystery Location

Surprise!!!! the sun is out…Yay!!! The pooches are sitting by our door waiting for us, for breakfast. We thank Mick for his hospitality and head on our way.

The air is crisp, the sky cloudy but partially blue and the sun is shining down on us.

DSCN1799a

Through Granya and then the climb through the Gap which we have done many times before.

DSCN1800a

The Granya Gap today though just like yesterday when we came back through it was littered with debris. Masses of leaves, bark and broken bits of branch (nothing big) were strewn all over the road. Needless to say it was a gentle run but safe.

I don’t know where we are going today, it’s a surprise that my Sweety Karl has organised. I do know though that we are going to Omeo. We head for Bright down the Cow Rd at a steady pace. It’s beautiful this morning, fresh and uncluttered. Up the Tawonga Gap Rd and we stop at Sullivans Lookout for a pic

DSCN1802a

There are way too many folk in Bright today for our liking and we decide to go to Harrietville for a coffee. Bella’s is the place to go. Hot chocolate and coffee to warm the cockles… 🙂

Bella's Cafe

Bella’s Cafe

Karl says are you ready for Hotham. Yeah sure! The road to Hotham is one of the best and most scenic roads you will ever encounter. It winds its way around and around Mt Hotham until you reach its pinnacle at Hotham Village. It’s very chilly, so chilly that you can smell the cold, well I would say oncoming snow in the air.

DSCN1814a

DSCN1817a

You can’t help but take pics….the view is just spectacular.

DSCN1818a

Anyway, time waits for now man and we still have a bit to go to get to Omeo for lunch. Over hill and over dale and round the hill and over dale again as we meander down the tail of the snake. Karl let me lead this section and somewhere along the way I picked up some mojo and was off…….. I so enjoyed that section of road and had Dudley on his toes, flicking this way and that 🙂 Into Omeo and we choose to have lunch not at the bakery (like every man and his Harley) but at the little take away store down the road a bit.

Omeo Cafe

Omeo Cafe

The locals eat here and the lady behind the counter is more than happy to serve you with a lovely smile a bit of a chat and will make you anything from a cheese sandwich to a hot meal. It’s value for money and tastes good!

Thankfully Karl took the lead from here 1) because I had no idea where we were heading and 2) I wanted to keep my license…..lol. A lucky thing that was too, cos on top of the hill near the Ensay Cemetery, hiding in the bush was Mr Pold with his hair dryer. Thanks Sweety, dodged a potential bullet there.

Bruthen for fuel and it’s where the grey clouds that have come over start to have a little bit of a cry..damn. Anyway, we turn right and I’m thinking Oooo where are we going….the answer soon appears that we are staying in Bairnsdale – The Mystery location.

But not just any place in Bairnsdale….we are staying at “The Riversleigh” Boutique Accommodation & Function Venue…Ooolala!! I just melted! Sweety, I love you!

20160319_172823a

I have a friend who lives here in town Graham “Hackle” and I figure that if I didn’t drop him a line I’d be getting my butt kicked next time I see him. I asked Graham if he was free to catch up and we enjoyed a pleasant evening learning about each other (well usually it’s just a quick meet and greet and we are all off on our bikes heading for the next destination) and having a great meal at the local Bowling Club.

This holiday stuff is hard work and we are getting tired. Graham drops us back to our luxurious accommodation and lets us know about a ride that is on tomorrow if we feel so inclined.

Thank you Graham for your wonderful hospitality. It’s lovely knowing I have fabulous friends that are scattered far and wide around this country.
